Andrea Palmate has just released OpenRedAlert for AOS4x, it is available for download on OS4Depot (thanks Andrea). This will work with the original Red Alert or the demo (link provided by Andrea).

EA has just released the original Red Alert for free download (very large files), here is the link

So far looks pretty good but it is still work in development, the good news is it looks like EA will not object to the development of ORA given they have provided RA free, unlike Westwood did with OpenCNC.

I look forward to how this continues to develop.

Can somebody please write a step-by-step guide about how to get this game up and running? I downloaded the demo files and the exe, unpacked them into same directory, launched the game by doubleclicking to the tool icon. A short animation appears and then...nothing.

Am I missing some files yet?

On another note, I downloaded the rar files of RA1 from EOA site - how do I get them unpacked? Unrar from OS4Depot seems unable to unpack them.

All help in these issues is much appreciated

unrar on OS4Depot definitely works - that's what I used.

The RAR XAD plugin (v2.1 - on Aminet/OS4Depot) may or may not work if you have OS4.1 - I'm not sure if it will swap out to disk (if you have GBs of memory there's a possibility it won't need to though!)

You need to put CONQUER.ENG (I got this only by installing and running the patch on a PC, I don't think it's on the CD but I may have missed it) in the OpenRedAlert root, and MAIN.MIX (from the root of the CD image) and REDALERT.MIX (from Install dir on the CD) in data/mix.

I found this out by trial and error, some documentation would have been nice. Even the official OpenRedAlert site doesn't appear to say which files go where.

Anyway, the game crashed about two seconds in, so it's hardly playable.

Okay, I managed to unpack the RAR files now - with the unrar from OS4Depot (I guess I used wrong command switches with it). Gotta burn those ISOs on CD-R disks now.

I have OS4.1 but no SWAP partition, so I don't know if the RAR XAD plugin swaps or not - UnArc did ran out of memory, thought (I only have 512 MB of RAM) so I could not use it to unpack the files.

With Soviet Disc you play with Sovietic forces ( i Russi )

With Allies Disc you play with Allied forces ( gli Alleati )

You have different vehicles, end sequence and so on..

But I can play with Sovietic forces although I installed the mix files from the Allied forces CD. Very strange.

I read from some readme that all missions exists on both discs. Only videos are different.

Just copy MAIN.MIX (in the root of the CD) and REDALERT.MIX (in the INSTALL/ directory of the CD) to the OpenRedAlert drawer.

That's all
