Yeah, the documentation is minimal as is the error reporting (although the Installer script is quite good). That error probably means it can't contact the printer.
What sort of printer is it? If it's a newish one it may well support IPP natively, in which case the details you need will be in the web interface on the printer.
If not, you'll need to install CUPS on a Linux box, set that up so it can print, and also set "share printers" and "remote admin" in the server settings.
Then you can go to http://printserver:631/printers - that will show all the printers, the whole printer URL you need to give ipp.device is the URL behind the link for whatever the printer is.
If it's an HP printer, apparently the URL should be http://169.254.15.2:631/ipp/port1 (with your printer's IP address in place of that one of course)

Nope, it's a HP Laserjet 5L Centronics. I have it plugged to a FritzBox 7240 through an USB to Centronics adapter. Not even the router tells me there is a printer by name installed, it just says "Prolific Technology Inc. IEEE-1284 Controller USB-Drucker", still it works when sending the data RAW through lpr (at least it did)

That's unfortunately no option for me

I take it you mean "new" HP printers here? Because with this method i get the same "error".
Hmm, i'll need to install the Centronics LAN/WLAN print server again i have lying around here...iirc it was able to give a name to the installed printer.
It's a Trendnet TEW-P1PG
Will see if that one helps.
Thank you for the info and heads up, Chris
EDIT: Gone back to lpr printing (now over the Trendnet printserver - need to check if the crashes i get are maybe caused by the not 100% supported USB adapter - two test pages didn't bring up a crash at least).
IPP is said to work with the Trendnet but it's not, at least not internally, i get a "Function not supported" or similar when trying to browse to print.server:631/printers/printer-name.
I also tried lpd from ssolie, but ... i dunno what to do, i installed it as internet server...but then what? Where do i send the print jobs? The documentation on this one is even worse than the ipp one for a linux/printing noob like me... (sorry Steven)

I can't find any mention of IPP in the FritzBox manual.

Yes, ones with an internal JetDirect.

No mention of it in the manual, and a webpage with specifications on didn't mention it either.

No idea. I think I tried it once and didn't get anywhere.

Yes, the Trendnet itself has a "Network" page within it's web config, showing IPP as part of the print job lists...this is how it looks like, so i thought it's supported internally (but as i found it's not):

Well, here's hoping that the driver development from the start of this thread goes over the finish line

Update: Feb 2013- starting at post 231, Terminills is working on getting glutenprint working on AROS & then hopefully on OS3.x & OS4.X. So far I've got text AND graphics printing out on my DOT4 printer & I've never got this far with either AmigaOS4.1 or AROS before
If you can help out just chime in

Aros68k, 3.1 and 4.0 all seem to be able to run the ixemul version fine.

Trying to figure out why there is a crash on exit. Might have to drop the ixemul version and just work on finishing removing dependencies(waiting for more tests tho.).
well my old trusty LaserJet 1012 finally broke down on me after all these years so I'm hoping I can get my HP LaserJet 2600n working with AOS either via USB or network (ethernet) via gutenprint

DSI is fixed ;D
And now ghostscript is attempting to communicate with gutenprint. :)
