As I understand it; Both CSPPC and BPPC systems are supported.
Go Hyperion Go! Lets hope Amiga inc don't ruin this. EDIT: Hmm! Where's the Dancing Banana's Orgin? And I won the Poll too! |

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
These are good news ! But it does not replace the need to see/use OS4 running on Sam, MacMini and other boards.

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
Great news. Thats 2 companies that haven't let us down, delivered what they promised.
Now lets see how long it takes me to blow up my A1200 BPPC unless somebody wants to buy it while its still works. |

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
Is this the 3000/4000 version or for the 1200 also?

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
CSPPC = A3000/A4000
BPPC = A1200 As I understand it, One CD will do all. If not both will be available on the day. (i.e. both versions released together, there will be no delay between both) Edit: Typo - forgot caps. |

Thank you Hyperion Entertainment make guys make tings happen
Discreet FX nice to see new software to OS4. I just wonder what happened to the money from the people donating to make it open source. |

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
SCSI is not supported by the BlizzPPC version, according to Rogue (on another site), although maybe it will be added later.
So you'll have to use sucky slow IDE with an A1200 on OS4 edit: Oh, if much faster IDE alternatives are supported by OS4 then not so bad (I don't have any experience with those as I went from PCMCIA HD to SCSI HD, completely avoiding IDE) |

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
@ChrisH
I never thought that the A1200's IDE was that bad. Fair enough, if you are shifting large amounts of data around then it's going to struggle, but for the majority of users and tasks that wouldn't be a problem anyway (and I suspect rather negated by the speed of the processor and memory that is dealing with this data, and the quicker access speeds of modern IDE drives) The issue here is that some people have SCSI drives with all their programs and data on, which OS4 won't be able to see. The solution is to buy a cheap IDE drive of sufficient capacity to transfer the data across, before installing OS4 on to the same. A bigger problem is that people with SCSI scanners or other SCSI peripherals won't be able to use them within OS4. Is it only the BPPC internal SCSI that isn't supported? If the Squirrel still works then there is another workaround there. Good news anyway. Chris |

Actually you'll be surprised at how fast a fastide device like the ones Elbox sell, make a difference. Add SFS or PFS3 and the thing flies. Yes, I am talking from experience, besides, SCSI like betamax has lost the battle. |

To the best of my knowledge no SCSI controller on the classics are supported except for the CSPPC. There might be SCSI cards that work, but I don't know for sure (as I said, a list of hardware will be published). The problem is that a lot of SCSI (or other controller's) firmware does not adhere to AmigaOS programming guidelines, namely using the OS calls for starting and ending DMA operations, making false assumptions that at no point in history would there be a time when the physical and virtual address of memory blocks differ. Edit: NOTE: I said "to the best of my knowledge". Meaning, I can't say for sure. I would recommend to check out the hardware compatibility list once it is available. |

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
Excellent news, congratulations to Hyperion and all the OS4.0 developers and contributors.
Incidentally I've managed to install the OS4 beta on an using the A4000 onboard IDE, the CS PPC SCSI and A4008 SCSI card so far. Am way from home atm so have not had a chance to try other hardware combinations. TrevorDick |

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
@Chris
Well, I wouldn't call 2MB/sec from the A1200's standard IDE port as "fast", particularly when you consider (IIRC) it wasn't DMA(?) and so required a lot of CPU time (or was that just the fact it used PIO modes?). While OS4 is never going to be really fast on Classic h/w, dog slow IDE access is not going to help. But reading-up on the speed of IDE alternatives for the A1200, it seems they get closer (6MB/sec) to the speed of SCSI (around 10MB/sec if I recall right). @MikeyC IDE has lost now too - it's SATA that is the future... |

Re: Amiga OS4 for Classic!
DiscreetFX buying Aladdin 4D?
DiscreetFX buying Aladdin 4D?!? This is big FAN-TAS-TIC news!!!! A native compile for AOS4 with Altivec support?! WAY coooool! Well, they ARE committed, aren't they? This is a "must buy", IMO. Hey DiscreetFX, check into Superbase 5, I believe it was Evilrich (or EvilFrog?) for Mr.Hardware (was it?) on Amigaworld.net that was coding on it. This and eventually IBrowse 3.0 native too, we're moving in the right direction, slowly, but we are indeed! I love Amiga! |

Please add BPPC SCSI support - I want to be able to use my flatbed scanner and hard drives with OS4.
