@cygnusEd

Great looking work! Between AbiWord and Gnumeric, we might
actually be able to start interacting with the rest of the real
(business) world with our Amigas again!

THANK YOU CygnusEd!

@DonF

Wouldn't the fact that the developers continue working on
OS4 and producing executables implicitly suggest that they
support that code's inclusion and release in Hyperion's
Amiga OS4?

Unless, of course, they are all chained up in Evert
Carton's basement...

And look at the flip-side: if they didn't support the use
of their products, I'd imagine work would stop immediately
and a page like this would appear:

Thanks for replys!

Few additional questions:

1) What about NIC, does it suffer from this DMA-problem in the long run?

2) About AC97-chip: there is only empty socket, where probabably that sound chip should be.. could I just rip off that chip from some pc-motherboard and put it there, or would it require some additional components?

3) Are there any temperature monitors on the XE-motherboard that could be read from OS4?

4) Is Radeon 9250 AGP is fastest 2D/3D-card currently for OS4?

@nubechecorre

Exactly what is needed... more people asking for something.

Why is it that everybody seems to want and nobody seems to make?

And before you say "I cannot program": If you don't then try to encourage the people that can instead of just asking and demanding. Offer a bounty for example.

Seriously, if you do want to contact me write me a mail. You're more likely to get a reply then.

@Snuffy

AmigaOne has standard PC floppy controller chip, the standard PC floppy disk can only read
9 sector per track disks (720k DD) or 18 sector per track disks (1.44mb HD).

The standard Amiga controller has 11 sectors per track (880k DD), and 22 sectors per track for HD disks.

The 2en difference is that MFM encoding on magnetic media is different on PC and Amiga.

The PC controller chips are not as flexible as the Amiga controller chips,
I think it has some thing to do whit rotation speeds of floppy media,

Buy a Cat MK3 or MK4 this will work whit the driver I wrote, but only in 880k DD format, the driver I have does HD and DD, but is buggy that way it?s not available.

Its a bug in Prefs/USB, the fixed version was not distributed yet.
Prefs/USB is just a GUI for editing the files in
the ENVARC:usb/system/ directory, you can use a text editor instead.

@Lio

Failing that, do a fresh install of IBrowse in a new location and test that. If it works its likely a configuration problem, if it doesn't something on the site(s) has probably changed.

No DVD burner in the A1, or why did you transfer the ISO image to another computer?

edit:
The one I have is an external, usb interface, usb stack doesn't support this one (yet?)
It should work, but USB 1.1 is way to slow, it would take about an hour, or even longer, to burn a DVD. Transfering the ISO image with ethernet to another computer and burning it there is much faster.

Request to AOS4 Developers
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi,

I don't post very often, so I'm not too sure if this is the right forum. I suspect it could become a "hot" subject, if the moderators disagree, please place it in the right forum.

This post came about in regards to the 20 questions by McElwen. Would you believe it, the 20 questions actually came up on the "Team Amiga Mailing List", a list that hardly ever discusses the Amiga anymore.

This has gotten me to doing a lot of thinking. 2 very active members of that List are Dave Haynie and Skal Loret (I'm sure all the old-timers remember them), and the list was hosted by Gery Peake for many years. I'm sure you all remember his death some months ago.

What many of you may not know is that Dave, Skal, and Gary (also Fred, but can't recall last name) all were owed a good deal of money by Amiga Inc (W). They, like Bolton Peck (and others) got nothing. They were left holding the empty bag, and in all instances it has been quite harmful to their futures. They have all expressed their unhappiness in no uncertain terms.

So what has this got to do with my subject, "Request to AOS4 Developers"? It has everything to do with it. As a result of these 20 questions/answers and the TAML discussion, I have decided that if either AI or Hyperion releases AOS4 plus hardware, I am going to ask (on this website) the AOS4 developers a simple question. I am going to ask them if this is the release that they are in favor of and that they will get paid for. I am really going to want a straightforward answer from all of you.

It is our developers who have done all the work to produce this great AOS4 that I am typing this on. It is they who should get paid for the work. The 2 businesses (AI and Hyperion) have done very little, other than sit back and watch the developers work.

As much as I would like to, I will "NOT" buy a hardware plus AOS4 that does not include the developers approval! I don't care who owns the IP. If the developers aren't satisfied that they are being treated fairly, this is an immoral and unethical release. I couldn't live with myself, if a release was made against the interests of the developers.

Regards,
Don Feldbruegge

@Snuffy

Or more simply, the A1(XE|SE) reads and writes PC format floppies unless you install a catweasel card which will let you read amiga floppies.

Seems about right, you could check url prefs and see if something you've added is catching the sites you're having problems with.

Dont worry I have been able to log onto the net at work and read the odd occasional news. Tbh, I dont care much about the platform anymore amiga.inc is just bollocks, hyperion are acting like school kids (OoO oh look our shiny new toy you cant have it mwahahahaa its all ours , ours we tell you!!) we have hardware which is bloody pointless and to expensive. Need I say anymore?

I started playing with Cygnix tonight just to see how fast or slow it is under the latest update, believe me it is no slouch as it stands so any improvement will be great.

On which kind of partition did you install Cygnix? It is very important for the performance of Cygnix to install it on your fastest HD.

Example:

I've installed two test versions of Cygnix:
The first one on a HD connected to the onboard controller formatted with FFS without caching.
The second one on a HD connected to a SIL0680 controller with enabled DMA and formatted with SFS.

Then I started AbiWord on both systems. On the first system it needs 13 seconds, on the second system it only needed 5 seconds!

You see, that the perfomance of Cygnix depends much on the HD speed. Not only the startup is faster, also working with a program is faster too.

BTW: I figured out, that Cygnix does not work on a partition formatted without support for long filenames!!!
If someone has problems with Cygnix, please check this!

ftpd worked very well here also. And very easy to configure. Never got samba working in my A1 so ftpd was the solution for file transfer with my pcs.

After setting up again my A1 will try AmiDVD. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.

Really great job ! I tested the previous version and it was a good surprise, now it can bring us many missing apps.

What can I say. Brilliant work. All of a sudden we get an XCel capable spreadsheet to match the already available (and I have used it many, many times) Abiword. Don't forget we have the very capable PowerPoint viewr PointRider as well (native).

@acefnq
Thank you again I have now better results on PointRider (image and text rendering) and the next release will be much nicer.
