I bought the CD some months ago when Nova Design had their "special" on, but I have been unable to install it on an OS4 system.

The old Installer won't run under OS4, so I first had to copy the CD onto a clean partition and call it by the name of the CD ("IFXInstall"). Then I could change the default tool of the script to "Installer" and get the script to run.
Next problem is that the script looks for "=RAM:" and "=Progs:" (my destination volume), so I tried assigning those names to the proper places. That got a bit further, then I ran into the problem that "it can't find the file 'RAM:xxx.info'". Small wonder, it isn't in RAM: where it should be. They are using something called "lhex" to unpack their .lha archives and it seems to be the next utility that has passed its use-by date. I can edit every line containing "lhex" to use "lha" (changing the options and their order on the command line as well), but that will take years.

Has anyone managed to install this thing under OS4? How? Has anyone a working script that I can use?

cheers
tony

I sincerely doubt Hyperion are quaking in their boots. having said that it has to be remember that it is a court of law, not a court of justice.

Of course, if Amiga inc/itec win, it will just stretch this on further and further, how much longer people are prepared to wait is questionable.

@Atheist

Now also ITEC LLC is sueing Hyperion because they agreed to the $25k contract and payments!
To me Hyperion looks doomed now, how will they be able to pay all the money for the lawyers and defend themselves with two attackers?

I still hope for Hyperion to win, because for me, this seems to be the best possible result for OS4.

Let's be realistic, if Amiga Inc wins, there wont be a quick release of new hardware with OS4. First there is ACK who has yet to proove that he can produce something and second, there is the question about OS4 sources. Even if they are ordered by court to provide the sources, there are still the Friedens who own the kernel and there are other developers as well.
With the new lawsuit by ITEC, it will take even longer until everything is sorted out and then, and if Amiga Inc wins, they still need to sort out the situation about OS4 sources. It is not realistic that they will get everything complete and well commented. And which OS4-experienced programmers are working for Amiga Inc? I still have to see them.

It seems the problem was in AddNetInterface command in startup-sequence. I added RUN inf front of the command and everything is fine now. I wonder why there's no RUN by default?

Because you might have programs in user-startup (f.e. smbfs) or in WBStartup that require a network connection to be available on startup.

The solution I use here is to have a separate network-startup in S: containing the AddNetInterface and smbfs commands that I execute using "Run <>NIL: Execute S:network-startup".

UPDATE:

Heretic II: still crashes on OS4pre4 even with native ixemul installed. It displays yellow recoverable alert at the end of installation when the registration window is about to open.

Shogo: still no go. Freezes as soon as the launcher is displayed. Joerg, can you list your working tooltypes or send me the .info file please?

Wipeout2097: works great in OS4pre4. Thanks!

Quake2: works. I copied the pak files directly instead of unpacking them with UnArc.

Damn.. I couldnt get the tank stick to function on my A1 with either PS/2 or USB.. and then when I plugged my A1's keyboard back in after a while, it doesnt work properly anymore.. so I'm using another keyboard I found in my junk. :) I used the tank stick with USB on the PC though. It's great. The weight makes it perfect, it doesnt move while you're playing. $350 nzd and I'm already sick of it 1 hour?later?(hehe). I just need to find some better opponents maybe. I dominate my brothers. :P I have to admit I'm slightly unbeatable.

Agreed. I'm a stickler for icons (in a common format that everybody can see), documentation and installation scripts, unless they aren't necessary or the package in question is aimed at advanced/developer users.

It's one reason why I hacked the AmigaGuide output format into rman.

I've offered before, but I may as well repeat it - if anybody needs help with creating Installer scripts let me know. They really aren't anywhere near as complicated as people make out, unless you want to make them complicated

@Atheist

It is not a con game, but normal business practice for privately owned companies that have limited liability. That is to have a parent company where assets are held and subsidiary companies that operate as agents.

As Hyperion joined Itec into the case they have taken the necessary step to cover this. Whether there is enough merit in their case for the judge to do so is another question.

Whether such things are morally justifiable is another question, but it has long been the way of the world in business practice. There is no con, just barriers which companies normally employ to protect their assets.

Court costs would I think not be applicable unless there has been an act of bad faith somewhere along the line, or that the case had been brought forward on little merit. If they are awarded against anyone, it could well be in the other direction.

But where courts are concerned, it may well be better to just await for what eventuates. For our collective interest, I only hope for speedy resolution, push has come to shove, whoever is left standing will have to do.

Unusual Activity Spike
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

This afternoon my web site experienced a rather extreme (when compared to normal levels) activity spike. On a site that usually looks longingly at the goal of 300 hits per day there was an activity spike of 965 hits in less than 15 minutes, all from the same IP address in Moscow, Idaho, USA. All of the hits involved my ?Walking the Bee Tree Trail? photo album. I am wondering what sort of problem could cause a user?s browser to repeatedly access the same information at a rate of more than a hit per second? I am not thinking of an inadvertent double-click here, because it lasted for more than 10 minutes. No wrist is THAT durable.

Really? I get that loads here and only doing a hard reboot fixes it, and it doesn't always reoccur. Didn't think it would be CPU overheating. I'm not sure if it has been getting worse, but you've got me worried now.

I think he's talking about the effect of the CPUTemp docky written by Joerg. If the temperature gets too high, it does something to slow the CPU down to the equivalent of about a 1-2 MHz CPU. This prevents it from overheating, but definitely makes the computer sluggish. I tested it once by setting the temperature threshold too low. It's very effective. IIRC, the mouse was still usable though.

Amiga Inc. Delaware is playing a con game.

They've set up a multi-corporate shell game. How they work is, they NEVER have enough money available. They _only_ get funds as and when required. They are _never_ "sueable".

When Amiga Inc. Delaware lose the court case, and Hyperion Entertainment goes to claim THEIR court costs back from A(D), they'll throw their hands up and say "we ONLY have $100 in the bank...." Well, I guess that Hyperion will have to take something from their "Amiga Events Center in Kent" "investment(sic)". Kent won't give part of the 2.5 mil. to Hyperion without a fight, though. I guess they can't get access to that.

I think that A(D) is in very hot water, nonetheless. What kind of legal options does Hyperion have to use against a tactic such as this?

Support Amiga Fantasy cases!!!
How to program: 1. Start with lots and lots of 0's. 10. Add 1's, liberally.

News ?

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't made the skin capabilities so comprehensive! Still, I've been driven by what the testers have wanted, so it'll be worth it in the end.

In brief I've reduced the CPU time for software rendering alpha GFX considerably. This was really quite a complex optimisation exercise, and involved additional processing to actually save on raw pixel mix, layer and write operations. I'm pretty pleased with the results and so were the testers - It has made complex skins viable now.

I've just added left/right scrolling for playlists, as well as working listview slider gadgets. In a way I've written a basic GUI system with some pretty flexible means of positioning, moving and laying objects. (Future use... maybe..)

In a bid not to delay the release any further I'm trying to clean up the rough edges and release as frequent updates to the TuneNet site. I have 8 items left on my list to complete before I'm happy to release.

That's really all I can say at the moment, except for a big thanks to all involved in helping move this project along!

Cheers,
Bean.
