Re: Overheating amiga?
Home away from home

The 040 gets wery hot,remember that from my a4000 with the ppc 233+040/40. Not sure why they did not put an cooler on it. As i took an cooler from the original 25mhz cpu daughterboard. And put the huge fan from the back of the tower on top. Helped a bit,atleast the cpu was now colder. If you can't find a cooler i can take a look if i can find mine for you.....

Hi,

I have been watching Amiga forums on and off for the last few years but have always refrained from joining as some of the people seem to be very rude and aggressive towards amigans, no names mentioned but I guess you could say they must be very cold if their "colour" is any indicator.

Any how, I heard about the existance from a good friend of mine in Canada who informed me that this place was the friendliest place on the net for discussing all things Amiga. I hope he is prooved right.

I moved to the Phillipines about 10 years ago as the girls here are much more accomodating than the English chicks if you get what I saying gents? There aren't many Amiga users left over here in the Phillipines so it will be nice to talk about stuff with like minded fellas.

Oh, and back to the subject matter. I think the main problem the Amiga community has these days is lack of developers. The only thing that matters is developers, developers, developers!

Cheerio for now.
Steve

@BeSilly

i've got exactly the same problem in my a1200t!

first i had a blizzard 1240/40, with no cooler on it. it worked, but the system was slow and there were the gfx glitches. crashed often too (but sometimes i could use it for hours...).

now i have an another motherboard and a blizzard ppc with a 040/40 with no cooler (same stuff as before) and i've got the same gfx problems...

im sure its becouse of the heat. 040 not so rule:)

what type of cooler can be attached to a blizzard ppc? an old 486 cooler? or something newer?:)

The xe can be fixed to work good. 128mb ram is a bit too small though! But just remember that some people have been selling amiga stuff that hasn't existed,just be a bit careful,otherwise good luck and buy it

Not yet, keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow

Hopefully that will also be the day the BT engineer finally turns up to fix the mess they made to by ADSL connection last week when digging up a hole next to the telephone pole. This 24 kbps dial up really sucks

Absolute bargain in this market.
It could do with 512 mb ram really tho.

Have you tried unpacking it with either unrar or unzip?
Might work, because many PC-installfiles are packed with Winzip as an exe IIRC.

@BeSilly
The IDE fix is a motherboard modification which fixes a bus arbitration issue between the VIA IDE controller and the Ethernet chip. Without the fix, using the VIA IDE controller with DMA enabled and Ethernet at the same time will lock up the bus.

Running PC CD-ROMs on OS4

I recently acquired "Amiga classix 4 for PC/Mac" as it has plenty of great Amiga games available for EUAE. The earlier similar CDs have been Amiga friendly (the games have been available as ADFs in a separate directory), but this latest on is one of those 'auto-run' CDs with one huge .exe file.

The question is, is there a way to run (or unpack) that .exe file under OS4?

@Mitch

It needs to be set up from scratch. Locked down, only port 80 accessible freely, stuff like that. creating accounts. Setting up apache/php.

Plus I need to get access, which I haven't yet.

Whats wrong with the main server? Anything anyone else can give you help with?

Correct guys.

I changed the "Initial Boot Delay" from "Immediate" to "1 second" & we're back to normal now.

When you added the heatsink, did you use a bit of thermal grease? It's necessary to conduct the heat from the chip to the heatsink. No need for the "expensive" stuff like Arctic Silver, just the cheap stuff from RadioShack will work fine.

Also, if you want to know which chip(s) are shutting you down, you might want to play a bit with some freon spray, chilling one chip at a time until operation is restored.
Might be a bit hard to get nowadays, it used to be much easier to find before we got holes in the ozone layer.

Finally, check the rotation on the CPU fan.. they work better if they are blowing air onto the heatsink instead of pulling air from it.

The heatsink is definately greased on with a bit of thermal transfer compound. The fan is blowing through the sink rather than drawing through it too.

Not seen any freon spray, but my blistered forefinger is not a bad indicator .

Freon spray. Hmmm, is it legal still? I can't imagine it would be too good for the environment.

The subject line says it all

The machine is an A1-XE, G4 running at 800MHz and comes with 128MB of RAM and a Radeon 7000. It could me mine for 300 UKP <grin>

The seller tells me it has had a fix for the IDE, but I am not particulaly sure what he means by that

Could someone shed some light? I do recall there was an issue with the articia that affected UDMA and USB (or was it ethernet?)

It would make a rather nice yultide addition to my collection, but I'd prefer to know exactly what I'm getting for my money.
