A4000 64MB Ram (2 MB Chip) Cyberstorm PPC604e@200MHz CybervisionPPC Using SCSI from the Cyberstorm
Although you could use AmigaOS4 with just 64 MB RAM it's not much fun and you should get more. On AmigaOS4 you need more RAM than on AmigaOS 3.x: The kickstart is in the RAM instead of a ROM (and it's much larger than the 512 KB of AmigaOS 3.x), the MMU table need some RAM, the translation buffers for running m68k software with the JIT, PPC native executables are larger than m68k ones, etc. Quote: A little question (only if you've got the time) What horse should i bet on, if i want to change to DMA-able IDE/ATA (SCSI is getting too noisy and too slow) in the near future? AFAIK there is no DMA IDE controller for classic Amigas at all.

Even if Smithy isn't interested in doing an OS4 version he might let others do it at some point? It will be interesting to see when it is finished. I hope 2007 will be the year OS4 will finally see some up-to date browsers. Paihia, written from scratch. Sputnik, based on KHTML, basic version available on MOS. IBrowse 3, written from scratch or? when? Aweb, Going the KHTML route? any development done? Firefox, doubt we will ever see that

@Snuffy
I've been running memtester for two days,stopped it at loop 185. Everything was ok so far. Checked the irq too,was ok.
I've managed two times to get to the welcome window of os4,when hitting ok,a few seconds later i get GR complaining about locale.... Update 4 cd works fine when booted from the cd.....
Any other ideas?????

Well, I don't know. Tried running it today and failed miserably. Previously, I got it working with some "heatwave" gfx effects. I removed powerpc.library from my system, that may have something to do with it.
On the plus side, I managed to run "Freespace". Wow, I liked the game, but now it's VERY fast. I get some Grim Reapers midgame, but ignoring them allows me to keep playing normally. Earth2140 (and the Mission Pack, that never worked before!) now are running fine too.
Getting old games to run on OS4 final has been a curious experience. Sometimes they work, next day they don't. Weird.

I cannot agree with you there, BT may have caused temporary trouble for a few million people whereas M$ has caused prolonged trouble for billions of people.

Thank you for your answer, the problem is not the hot spot position, it seems to be good, but rather the form of the pointer itself that gives me a stange feeling because of not being rotated...
I see, it is the orientation of the actual pointer that you don't like. I have done a pointer and busy-bee one which I will probably get around to uploading to OS4 Depot one day. <rant> Not now as I am still stuck with dialup thanks to our wonderful telecomms company BT ruining my line and ADSL connection over four weeks ago. They still have not fixed it, BT are the one company in the world that are even worse than Microsoft </rant> Bill.

hi. when i use a true-color pointer, e.g. the one from os4depot, i get for a short period (1-2 seconds) a blank screen when starting up before the workbench is loaded/shown. going back to the "normal" pointer solves the problem but doesnot look so nice byebye...

problem with icon - drag and drop in rawbinfo

here's a problem with icons:
if you have an icon belonging to a drawer but the actual drawer is missing you cannot use this icon as a drag/drop source using with rawbinfo.
example: - get the masonicons for yam from masons homepage (yammi.lha) - extract the archive to ram: - there is a drawer icon for "Parsers" (Parsers.info) but the drawer is missing - you can see it if you doubleclick on that icon - open *another* icon with rawbinfo (icon information) - try to drag the Parsers.info icon to that one (-> try to replace your icon with the masonicon one) --> this will not work
but if you do a "makedir ram:yam/Parsers" to create the actual directory it works as expected.
byebye...

In RAWBinfo using English locale, "Projet/Delete Icon" and "Icon Image/Default" both have A+D shortcut, thus can't use "Icon Image/Default" anymore via keyboard only.

@all just a short update to say: os4 can actualy display japanese. here, i typed this text myself on my pc, saved as utf8 (unicode) exported the file on the miggy, and it showed perfectly well. everything is there, it's full japanese display support. http://keisangi.free.fr/amiga/os4japanese5.jpgthe text reads: AmigaOS4 can display Japanese text! all i did was loading a ttf font into typemanager, and have typemanager to open a file as a sample test. so one coul even save html page in japanese or whatever text in unicode and view it on os4 through typemanager :) all done by os4 itself, with no patch at all :)

@BobW
I've found a little additional information about the behavior of ethernet on my microA1:
Even if I set the interface configuration to static, I still sometimes get packet losses after a reboot. However, unplugging and reinserting the ethernet cable from the socked at the back of my microA1 causes the connection to become 100% reliable with no packet loss.
I don't think this is just a matter of a bad ethernet cable connector, because without moving or bumping the cable, I can cause the packet loss by rebooting, and then correct it by unplugging/replugging the ethernet cable. To try to eliminate mechanical failure of the connector, the next time this happens, I'll unplug the OTHER end of the ethernet cable and see what happens.
When I replug it, the indicator light in the receptical flashes briefly twice and then comes on steadily. To me (with my limited knowledge of ethernet hardware), this SEEMS like something is being reset when the connection is being reestablished. Speculation: the ethernet controller somehow gets into a bad state, and the replugging resets it to a valid state, after which everything works.
Perhaps others could try to verify this?

Not yet, though I was able to send a report to Deron, including a couple of screengrabs that held what might be valuable information for him. When I looked inside the app package I was able to double-click on the actual UNIX app, which launched through the terminal, and then gave a consistent reason for suddenly shutting back down.

Hi,
A bug in Collector? I could not beleive that! eheh
The patche you wrote work very well... what it does exactly?
Collector uses the graphics.library function WaitTOF() ("Wait for the top of the next video frame"), probably to sychronise the display of the progress gauge with the screen refresh rate, which doesn't make any sense and only slows it down (unless you have an incomplete graphics driver like the Update4 ATIRadeon.card which does nothing when WaitTOF() is called). For example games can use the WaitTOF() function after rendering a frame and wait until it's time for the next one, that way you get for example 80 FPS if you are using a 80 Hz screenmode since it makes no sense to render 200 FPS when the monitor only updates the display 80 times per second. My patch disables the WaitTOF() calls in Collector.
