Is anyone running stock ( no patches or gizmos ) levels of Workbench?

I tried recently, here is what I found:

Workbench 1.3

ARRRRGGGHHH!!! God this is AWFUL. Like the busy pointer though.

Workbench 2.04

Ugly, more pro looking but really ugly and doesn't do much. No backdrop picture!

Workbench 3.0

Disgusting. How was I ever persauded to use one of these?

Workbench 3.5

Hmm, almost like a real OS ;)

Workbench 3.9

Getting better, works pretty well off the CD.

Workbench 4.0 ( AmigaOS 4.0 )

Now that is what I call a decent out of the box experience.

I don't entirely agree.
Appearance is a personal taste (I mean appearance besides the imposed standards/expectation of the specific time). Besides that every single AOS release brought in it's innovations (all of them except 3.5/3.9) or facelifts (3.5/3.9) that were a must when I look backward. Every single of them. And without any bloat. And that should be appreciated nowadays. And it was very Unix-ish OS when you take the multi-userness out, ant that's good imho.

@All
His is a bit OT, but has some truth inside (although the wrong bit on cronologocal place of an Amiga):
something on OSes

Enjoy.

One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class.
She came to the part of the story where Chicken Little tried to warn the farmer.

She read, ".... and so Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that farmer said?"

One little girl raised her hand and said, "I think he said: 'Holy Shit! A talking chicken!'"

My A1 and 2 wintel machines are connected to a Netgear router/firewall... Only the windows machines get problems once in a while (tough a lot less since I stopped using MSIE )...

It does now. Will take a while to polish it up and test though. Don't want to just throw OpenSSH on the masses without proper testing.

Just jumped into the thread and saw this. Great news and job

How is that Amiga security FAQ coming along?

I drew 2.0-style 1.3 busy pointer (ie. a zzz with the 2.0 3D effect) ages ago, and I'm still using it on my AmigaOne. It's nicer than the default stopwatch (or I think so, anyway).

I uploaded it to Aminet not long ago as I thought others might like to use it:

@Mitch

I don't know what the VMS and MVS operating systems are about. I have never heard about those. Which computer were they designed for?
Of course I have heard about Unix, but I don't think it is comparable to Amiga OS. Unix is made for servers and the world wide web while Amiga OS is made for us, the consumers. People who appreciate its advanced multitasking capabilities.

@RomanceClip

I am shocked to hear that you had these fights with your brother. A computer system should not be the cause for such negative emotions. I think we should all make sure that we are here because of the fun of computing. Everytime I look at my Amiga, I get this warm feeling in the stomach. Positive emotions, that is what the Amiga computer is to me!

Wings???

I know Wings from the disks, played it through, great atmosphere,
challenging, but i think you are talking about Wing Commander?

Well, WC i never finished, hehe, lost interest after being too
early on top of the roster and none of my wingmans could
catch up, started to loose them like flys to a honeypot in
later missions, though, gave up on it :-/

Still nice game

ClusterMaps would make a neat addition to Amigans.net

Thanks for the suggestion, Raziel. Just ordered Superfrog from Software Hut. I'll keep Pirates Gold! in mind just in case they don't have the other.

Also Wings even though I'd prefer to hear from someone who's actually played it and had some experience with it.

Superfrog definitely, one of the best Jump'n Runs around and
with the funny intro from Eric W. Schwartz it takes it beyond

Pirates Gold! is also a great classic

So a basic FAQ for complete beginners would have topics like:

Personal security and the Amiga

= Basic precautions

= Remote shells and file transfer

= Types of software not to install

= What to check before you connect directly or put your Amiga in a DMZ

= What if I really must run some of the not recommended packages on my intranet/internet

Privacy and the Amiga

= General privacy, and how to get it working under the Amiga

Developing Daemons

= Pitfalls

= Good design patterns

> Now do you see my point? "I should be ok" sure. "you are ok so long as you don't open a port" sure. But what if someone does?

In one word: Don't.

The Amiga is hardly suited for serving documents to a publicly exposed network, and it is definitely unfit for running CGI scripts -- at least by the means of executing binary code. What I would find myself halfway comfortable with, though, is when the webserver (and all accompanying CGIs) were written in safe scripting languages, i.e. pointer-less, with automatic memory management. But I still wouldn't run such a setup unless I had written every single line of code myself.

Use Linux oder *BSD for serving documents to the outside world, that's what they are made for. Get a VServer-enabled kernel or use 'jails' and setup your software in a virtual environment. You can even mess around with half-finished scripts in a public network then. OS3 and 4 simply lack the needed features for that.

That is interesting! My younger brother of two years bought a 520ST some time after I bought my A500. We had big arguments over the computers and he turned increasingly vitreolic and vile towards me and my family.

I ended up having a nervous breakdown which I believe was a direct result of all this. I believe he was so eaten up with jealousy over my A500 that he went out and bought the ST in sheer malice and spite. Luckily I was saved (physically, emotionally and spiritually) by the Jehovah's witnesses from the Kingdom Hall 2 blocks away. I haven't spoken to my brother since this time (1989) and I have been told by God that the devil used my brothers' Atari as a conduit to take his soul.

I don't have a grudge against Atari users in general.
