This is very much like the Kickstart and Workbench Disk scenario we have with the classic Amiga.

Is it not possible for Amiga to port OS4 to an FPGA board with a soft PPC - like the uC-Linux boards I see selling for $160?

Amiga Inc could license a dongle for it.

I know where you're coming from.

I had all my eggs in the TI 94/A basket and then TI abandoned us all to oblivion.

Luckily the Amiga came along at an opportune point but not before I had invested some, not inconsiderable, amount of money into the Texas.

Nothing like that can happen under OS4. Even hacking utilities like NMAp can't identify
the host operating system, let alone try to attack OS4.

True and it's good. But that's easy. No other AOS had an open port (no tcp/ip stack). And I don't thing they (nmap) bothered collecting any identification of any network service available on AOS.

Quote:
Also, not having any open port by default, does certanly help.

However it's certainly not sufficient. Every protocol has to have the highest (if it is possible) security-wise level.

For the record, I've been running an A1 on the internet for the last 4 years, with a STATIC ip address and without any kind of firewall.
Never had a "security" problem.

A bit paranoid look on this: it is good untill something happens

Are you sure? I don't remember it having any open port (first thing I did when Ihad AOS4, I nmap-ed the it)

Is anyone running stock ( no patches or gizmos ) levels of Workbench?

I tried recently, here is what I found:

Workbench 1.3

ARRRRGGGHHH!!! God this is AWFUL. Like the busy pointer though.

Workbench 2.04

Ugly, more pro looking but really ugly and doesn't do much. No backdrop picture!

Workbench 3.0

Disgusting. How was I ever persauded to use one of these?

Workbench 3.5

Hmm, almost like a real OS ;)

Workbench 3.9

Getting better, works pretty well off the CD.

Workbench 4.0 ( AmigaOS 4.0 )

Now that is what I call a decent out of the box experience.

I don't entirely agree.
Appearance is a personal taste (I mean appearance besides the imposed standards/expectation of the specific time). Besides that every single AOS release brought in it's innovations (all of them except 3.5/3.9) or facelifts (3.5/3.9) that were a must when I look backward. Every single of them. And without any bloat. And that should be appreciated nowadays. And it was very Unix-ish OS when you take the multi-userness out, ant that's good imho.

@All
His is a bit OT, but has some truth inside (although the wrong bit on cronologocal place of an Amiga):
something on OSes

Enjoy.

One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class.
She came to the part of the story where Chicken Little tried to warn the farmer.

She read, ".... and so Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that farmer said?"

One little girl raised her hand and said, "I think he said: 'Holy Shit! A talking chicken!'"

My A1 and 2 wintel machines are connected to a Netgear router/firewall... Only the windows machines get problems once in a while (tough a lot less since I stopped using MSIE )...

It does now. Will take a while to polish it up and test though. Don't want to just throw OpenSSH on the masses without proper testing.

I drew 2.0-style 1.3 busy pointer (ie. a zzz with the 2.0 3D effect) ages ago, and I'm still using it on my AmigaOne. It's nicer than the default stopwatch (or I think so, anyway).

I uploaded it to Aminet not long ago as I thought others might like to use it:

@Mitch

I don't know what the VMS and MVS operating systems are about. I have never heard about those. Which computer were they designed for?
Of course I have heard about Unix, but I don't think it is comparable to Amiga OS. Unix is made for servers and the world wide web while Amiga OS is made for us, the consumers. People who appreciate its advanced multitasking capabilities.

@RomanceClip

I am shocked to hear that you had these fights with your brother. A computer system should not be the cause for such negative emotions. I think we should all make sure that we are here because of the fun of computing. Everytime I look at my Amiga, I get this warm feeling in the stomach. Positive emotions, that is what the Amiga computer is to me!

Wings???

I know Wings from the disks, played it through, great atmosphere,
challenging, but i think you are talking about Wing Commander?

Well, WC i never finished, hehe, lost interest after being too
early on top of the roster and none of my wingmans could
catch up, started to loose them like flys to a honeypot in
later missions, though, gave up on it :-/

Still nice game

ClusterMaps would make a neat addition to Amigans.net

Somewhere on the top right would be nice, too much free
