You're right. Open source is probably not the solution for OS4.

Actually a friend answered this very well on one of the swedish forums, but I lack the time to translate it right now. I agree with most of his words:

Well this few lines says it all, open sourceing it did not help.

As for AmigaOS4, I don't think open sourceing it will help, the lack of license is what's keeping it back, there exits hardware out there like PS3, Sam440, Elfika, MacMini, but it impossible because of on going legal problems.
