I use the on-board SATA for my hard drive, then connect a USB CD/DVD drive. That allows me to use the PCI slot for a sound card. It works out very convenient for me because I just share the USB CD/DVD drive among all my computers, saving me from having to buy one for each of them. However, I know that may not be what you prefer. You could also use an SDcard as your hard disk, then use the on-board SATA for the CD/DVD drive, so you can use your PCI slot for a sound card. You would need a very fast SDcard though, because most of them are slower than hard drives.
