Yes it happened! Lunapaint is now open source. I set up a berlios project and you can find the project at: http://lunapaint.berlios.de Lunapaint v0.3.2 is now under development and is primarily a bugfix release. So now, go ahead and port this app to MorphOS, AmigaOS 3.x and OS4. There is no excuse not to!
Take a look at the Lunapaint Homepage (especially the 'features' section . It looks comparable to Photogenics, but it also has animation support and it's free. Its development is progressing really fast.
Well actually I have attempted to port Lunapaint after hearing it went open source. Initial work only took a few hours.
And it *almost* works! However there's a fundamental bug somewhere that's stopping it dead but when I get some more time I'll have another go. It does start, load the toolbar and look pretty though!
In other news apparently someone else has it working under OS3 and expects that to be OS4 friendly. However it would be nice to have a proper OS4 port.
If I still can't get anywhere perhaps I'll post my efforts somewhere for someone to have a butchers at.

When I try to open Lunapaint in [resolution] it crashes immediately! Why?
1. You have forgotten to set the bitdepth to 24 and the width and height to default (or to the width and height of the actual display). 2. You have forgotten to assign Lunapaint: to the directory you installed it in.
You might want to check that, although that crash should really be fixed so that you don't have to do those two things.

I am very very VERY SONIK... err interested in seeing this port done, as I find most of the ... well... the few 100% working gfx apps under os4 final very un-intuitive.
