Does USB MassStorage Commodity show more than one partition on the flash drive? Years ago I bought a Kingston flash drive that had 2 partitions; a small CDFS partition with security software and a large FAT partiton. I couldn't write to the CDFS partition but the FAT partition worked normally.
Here is a link to a post about similar issues:

When I copied my System partiton to the FAT partition and plugged the flash drive in before cold booting, my system recognized it as a CD but booted from the FAT partition. That was before OS4 was supposed to be able to cold boot from USB!
If your flash drive only has a single partition, then it would probably be easier to get a cheap new flash drive than struggling to get the 4GB flash drive working.
