4GB not enough for Amiga games!
Home away from home

Never thought I'd see the day, but the 4GB partition I'd set-aside for Amiga games is no-longer big enough

And yes, they are games I bought (or which were free ports). Doing a full install of Crossfire 2 proved to be too much.

I'm surprised you created a partition that small - don't you have a 200GB HDD?

I want AOS4 to have a feature to (OPTIONALLY) limit physical RAM per application. There are apps (like quake1) that reserve all the RAM, untill it ends and only then starts to release/recycle it.

IIRC, on 68k virtual memory apps it was possible to set what amount of physical and virtual memory some application is allowed to have.

Then, no application can steal the responsiveness of a OS.

i say you need to set aside about 20-25gb. as you start to install lots of PPC games along with classic even this may not be enough.

i also think its about time we have 16bit version of Quake 1.

i do belive even clasic amigas can run this @800x600 16bit PPC.

Just a few games take most of the space:

Myst = 660MB (I modified it to not need the CD)
Crossfire 2 = 640MB (full install)
Quake 3 = 520MB
Quake 2 = 400MB
Quake 1 = 390MB (has lots of 3rd-party maps)
Descent 2 = 350MB (I haven't actually got this to work yet)
Heretic 2 = 280MB (this doesn't work very well)
Genetic Species = 110MB (hadn't had much luck with this yet either)
Doom = 100MB (quite a few extra maps)
Wipeout 2097 = 78MB

Those alone account for 3.5GB !!!

About 8 GB of OS4 native games, though without the demoversions of some commercial games (that'd be where to start deleting). Still more than that left on the same partition.

I have a 80 GB partition with approx. 57 GB filled with games (ScummVM adventures and some OS4 native games - i'm picky when it comes to games )

All of them, of course, legally purchased

I would like to have the option to launch Amiga games without real installation, because now it seems that we will have possibility to have 2Gb and more RAMdisk.

+ AOS could have a standard path/assign for game saves.

So what? Do you mean there are too much apps for OS4?

Ok, more seriously. Today harddisk are so big that 4GB is just ridiculous.
I have a 160GB harddisk which is considered small by today standards and my partitions are all 20GB. And I still have unpartioned space!!!

I know, it's too small... I also have many games and a lot of them since the OS4 prerelease was out. Do you remember, there were also some in the contributions drawer.

I think a 40 GB or better 60 GB harddisk only for the games would be good also, it's always less than the partition for PC games !

Don't forget all ports of HunoPPC who brought us nice games ! the WHDLoad patched games, those who are taking from PC CD and need only a simple rewritten engine in order to make them work on the Amiga NG and without forgetting all Emualtors !

Yes, we are lucky ! And imagine if you say to your friends : "Hey, I can run a PC game on my Amiga NG!"... even if they are a little outdated (a simple detail).

Nic

well i had that experience too many times in the past and that's why when I set up my OS4.1 system I got a 250 GB SATA HD for it...now more than enough for any AmigaOS and Debian stuff
