Just can't stay away

I have a problem with DiskImageDevice and everything started after trying the new version of Gfx2Bench on my Sam440ep mini-itx..

Ok, now i explain what happened to my system:

I have just downloaded the new Gfx2Bench (HansDeRuiter's program) to make a simple Bench of my system..

I tried it on my Sam440ep Mini-itx.. During the test, the screen went black
and remained black for some time,, At the beginning I thought it was ok,
then i realized that something went wrong so I decided to reset my system
and so I did..

After that, at the startup my system wasn't able to run Ringhio and
DiskimageDevice.. that's what i mean:

Ringhio splash screen was totally empty, an empty blank window and
DiskImageDevice too..

So i rebooted the system entering the early statup menu, booting without
startup-sequence and disabling both programs in the wbastartup menu..

I rebooted and everything was fine, so i went for the next step, see what
program was causing these troubles..

First i launched Ringhio from workbench and it started without problems, so
I added it, again, in the wb startup menu, rebooted the system and saw that
it worked fine and without problems

Ok, so I tried to run DiskImageDevice from workbench but it only displayed
an empty windows with no gui, only the title of the window said:
"DiskImageDevice"..

So i uninstalled it from my system, re-downloaded it from os4depot and
reinstalled.. Rebooted my system and launched again, but still no luck,
same problem.. so I deleted the xml file from ENV: hoping that it could
help, but no luck, again,, so here i am, asking for your help, trying to
understand what happened and how to fix the problem..

I also tried to reinstall AISS from MasonIcons's site.. but nothing
to do..

What Can I do?

Did you also remove the DiskImageDevice XML files from ENVARC: too. It creates a DiskImage directory in ENV: and ENVARC with the XML files in the directory.

No, ok i try to remove everything related to DiskImageDevice and reinstall it from scratch

Nope, i tried to remove everything but no luck.. When i try to double click the icon to pop up the window, the window is totally blank.. and honestly i do not know what to think.. maybe some library corrupted? but which one??..

that's my xml file, maybe the problem is this.. who knows..

I reinstalled it from my Amiga OS4.1 CD, but same problem..

Sounds weird.

I would turn off the machine, take out the RAM and any other detachable components (any PCI card in there?), clean the contacts and re_insert them. My main suspect would be the RAM. But check also that all cables are secure, e.g. SCSI plugs firmly attached at both ends, power plugs not wiggling, etc.

Something seems to be not working reliably, possibly after running a heavy load.

CPU cooling okay?

My system is a Sam440ep Mini itx, gpu and cpu are integrated, no PCI and the system works fine with all the programs.. even with DiskImageDevice.. but suddenly after trying GFX2bench appears this bug(?).. Maybe some libraries? but which library does DiskImageDevice use?

Just can't stay away

I can try to use a serial cable to capture some output and save it with hyper terminal on the pc, just i don't know how to do that? some hints? :)

Fortunately all the important files have the same version (at least in the latest archive at OS4Depot) so check that these files all have the same version number:

If the version are the same and all the above files are correctly installed on your system then I'm not sure what your problem might be.

You don't need to connect a serial cable to capture debug output if the program hasn't crashed and frozen your system. Open a shell and enter "DumpDebugBuffer CLEAR" and ignore the output. Leave the shell open, start DiskImageGUI and then enter DumpDebugBuffer in the shell. If there is a any debug output from DiskImage you should see it in the shell window.

At that point, you probably want to preserve the output by redirecting it directly into a disk file: DumpDebugBuffer > yourHD:yourPath/yourfile. Thanks for the infos, I tried to dump while DiskImageDevice was running but after launching the program the system froze and it wasn't possible, for me, to gather more infos.. Btw, after resetting the sam (soft reset) I used the dumpdebugbuffer > myhd:file.txt and i obtained something.. Here what i got:

Did you try SnoopDOS when trying to run DiskImageGUI (supposed that you've not renamed the file to something else)?

I tried but without luck, when i run DiskImageDevice everything freezes and even Snoopy, so I am not able to catch the log of Snoopy even in a file..

Honestly I would like to solve this problem without reinstall the system from scratch..

There is no need to install Workbench from scratch (that's a Windoze-only attitude when something isn't working).

You can start by overwriting the system files from your AmigaOS 4.1 CD, preferably why not starting with the Kickstart/ drawer first?

Another alternative solution before trying the above.

DiskImageDevice needs also this stuff for some plugins:

capsimage.device
z.library >= 52.1
bz2.library >= 1.2
expat.library >= 4.1
mpg123.library >= 52.1
libFLAC.so
libwavpack.so
CBM1541FileSystem
SAMDOSFileSystem
XISOFileSystem

So if you have installed something from the above then it's better to re-install it again in case some files are corrupted.

NOTE: Also remember this as it happened to me. I renamed DiskImageGUI to something else and after that it refused to run, but when I renamed it back to its original name (DiskImageGUI), it run again! Strange, but it happened.

Ok at last i found the problem!.. I have installed in my system 3 amiga themes from the same author and i discovered that all the 3 themes (not toghether obviously) were the cause of my problem with DiskImageDevice..

I tried to use the default amiga os 4.1 theme and then launched DiskImageDevice and it worked fine!, so i tried one theme per time and I discovered that these 3 themse are not compatible (for some unknown reaasons, at last for me) with DiskImageDevice:

Deadflat_ii theme
Transmetal theme
lila theme

If anyone would like to try to confirm my theory it will be usefull for all the comunity :)

It might be that the image for the snapshot button in the window titlebar is somehow done wrong in those themes (not many programs use it so I guess the theme author might not have noticed). Anyway it's good that you found the solution to your problem.
