[Solved] How to delete a file that ends with ':'?
Just popping in

Hi,

I have an issue that Wookiechat created a log file ending in ':'. Do not ask me how it managed to do it.

dir Workbench:Internet/WookieChat/Logs/

AmigaWorld.net_#amigadev:
delete Workbench:Internet/WookieChat/Logs/AmigaWorld.net_#amigadev:
DELETEdevice (or volumeis not mounted

But how do I get rid of it? Deleting with shell, Filer or WB does not work. Everytime I try, I get a window saying:
"Please insert volume AmigaWorld.net_#amigadev: in any drive"

Any idea?

Thank you,
Flynn

To answer my question: strangely enough, Directory Opus 4 was able to handle this issue and delete the file.

Not sure what Directory Opus does different than WB or DOS...

@FlynnTheAvatar

Followup for the DOS Gurus...

Is it possible to erase that file with OS tools (w/o the need for third party stuff)?

Thank you

@Raziel

I would think you could do it with a pattern, e.g. "delete Workbench:Internet/WookieChat/Logs/AmigaWorld.net#?".

Best regards,

Niels

Using patterns is one option, and if "delete" still doesn't work that way maybe first renaming the file could work.
If the OS C: tools can't do it another possibility would be to use the SDK (coreutils) "rm" instead.

But what's more important: It shouldn't be possible to create files with a ':' in the name at all.
Which file system was used and allowed to create such a file name? It's a bug in the file system which has to be fixed.

Thank you for the suggestions, but they do not work. Using "DELETE #?" or "rm *" always opened the window with "Please insert volume ...".

Also, renaming had the same issue.

@joerg: The filesystem is NGF\00. And yes, it is ancient, there is a new version, but the general public has no access to it. <rant>As for most other improved components of OS 4.1</rant>.

EDIT:
If you want to reproduce the issue, create a file, and rename it to <File>: in Directory Opus 4. And see if you can get rid of it without using DOpus again.
