Filer - What program is that?
Not too shy to talk

I have discovered on several AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 screenshots that there is a program called "Filer",
noticed as an icon on AmiDock..

What program is the "Filer", really? I suppose it might be
a useful program.

Soon to own a powerful AmigaOne X1000 with latest AmigaOS 4.1 incarnation ;) Dual Core PPC!

Hi , well the "Filer" is a file and directory manager like the DIRECTORY OPUS 4, but with windows in the Workbench.

So you can open any "FILER" window and make it the "source" and others the "destiny".

The use is similar to DIRECTORY OPUS 4, and you can configure all the system.

In the last version, you can even copy and paste over the Worckbench and opened windows.

It's a very good program...

Sounds very interesting. I have to see it for myself when i get the new X1000 with AmigaOS 4.1 later in summer..

It has been over 3 years since i used an Amiga-system,
so i guess it will take some time for me to memorize how
to use the Amiga system again..

To me it sounds like DOpus Magellan features being integrated to AOS4 WorkBench.

Just like ... Directory Opus 5/Magellan

It's the single best 3rd-party add-on to Workbench that is available, at least for DOpus5 addicts like me:
http://openamiga.org/?function=viewproject&projectid=20
http://os4depot.net/index.php?functio ... pshot/display&fileid=5407

Recently it had (automatic) thumbnail previews for pictures added to it, which is really handy.

Like DOpus 5 it is highly configurable, and in fact really needs a bit of configuring before it will work best for you (although it's default config is a lot more useful than DOpus 5's).

First thing you will probably want to do is tick "Reverse source/dest button", as most (?) people seems to find the default counter-intuitive (I am one of them) for copying/moving files.

Hi @ChrisH

Just like ... Directory Opus 5/Magellan...
Nah, it reminds me of Martin Elsner's "ClassAction".
That was my file manager of choice in OS 3.9. The "Filer" has moved beyond that; it's classier!

First thing you will probably want to do is tick "Reverse source/dest button"...
Love this new preference! Now, I can throw away DirOpus! =:o

Is it possible to change the menu-definition in Filer?
So, I don't want to create a new user button with a own
definition, but change an already existing menu entry.

I'd like to start GoldED instead of Notebad when choosing
"Edit" from the menue.

How can I do that? Or is that not possible?

Thanks,
nexus

notepad is just the default. You can define what programs should be started by defining an "editor" in file type preferences.

Sorry, I don't get how to do that?
In File Type Prefs, I have to specify all the filetypes which should start Golded instead of Notepad? That seems pretty complicated. Can't I just say somehow, that the default editor is Golded?

Thanks,

Currently you have to set which file types that should be opened with a specific editor. There's no way to change the default editor.

You only need a single entry though since you can specify several deficon id's per file type.

okay, thanks.
Filer is great! The only thing that's missing is Drag'n'Drop from filer to applicaions and AppIcons but I guess that's not possible with the current workbench?

Thanks again!

Correct, it is not possible. There is a proposal on OpenAmiga about how Hyperion could allow it.

Filer is the best bit of software on the Amiga at the moment.

Thats what it is.

Both ClassAction and DirOpus4 follow the classic dual-lister paradigm while Filer uses single listers. It may take some time to get used to it but it is well worth the change. Especially with the Filer commodity (which starts a new lister when clicking in an empty space on WB) the new file management system is very powerful and easy to use. I haven't started DOpus for months now

I have preferred the dopus4 way of handling files. The main feature that I would like to see more in it is tabs.

Windows explorer, linux, OSX way of file handling sucks bigtime.

Time will tell if filer manages to please me (I did not like Dopus5 way of handling things either, to me it was for example unclear to where the copy is going to end up etc. Dopus4 way limit mistakes and is very SIMPLE).

Is it possible to get the name of a selected file from filer to an arexx script, which I have defined as a user button?
