special characters in cygnix

Just popping in

Hello everybody,

I wonder how can I use special characters requiring "dead" keys under cygnix, eg in Abiword or Pidgin, etc...
I speak of those characters requiring two keystrokes, like ? ? ? for instance.

Dead keys are not working under AmiCygnix, sorry. Seems to be a problem of the X server. I'm working on it.

The only way to insert such characters is the "add symbol" feature in AbiWord or if you have installed the tools package you can use the tool "Character map" available in the "Accessories" menu of lxpanel.
This is very uncomfortable, I know.

thanks anyway. It means that Abiword is usable only for English-speaking people

I have a new version of AbiWord here, which supports some new input modules. One of them offers a way to insert special chars by typing user defined key combinations for example "'a" for ?.

Another possibility is to use xmodmap.
I use it for other stuff than dead keys, here's what I execute on user startup:

xmodmap /home/.xmodmaprc
18.AOS4.1:> type home:.xmodmaprc
keycode 80 = Page_Up
keycode 81 = Page_Down
keycode 83 = F11
keycode 119 = F12
keycode 120 = Home
keycode 121 = End

Use xev to get keycode. Function keys can be reusable.
The trick will be to find out how to define the desire character.
one can expertiment using commands:

xmodmap -e "keycode 96 = F9 some-keycode-for-shift-F9"

Try keycodes values >=224 for starters.

Yep. 100% of pure dumb tinkering of the worst kind. But once one finds all the needed stuff, it's worth the effort.
