Spellcheck in abiword
Just can't stay away

It seems that english spellcheck is built in in Abiword.

How can Abiword be made to spellcheck on other languages? (dutch, french, . would be great )

Several language catalogs are available on OS4-depot too. Look at the packages starting with "aspell-". A french catalog is there, a dutch catalog is missing. If there is a dutch catalog for aspell, I can create a package and upload it too.

If you want to change the language in AbiWord, you must choose the menu item "Tools/Set Language...", choose the desired language in the window, activate "Make default for document" and click on "Close".

Thanks for the info. I downloaded a number of catalogs.

There is no duitch aspell dictionnary available. however on th aspell download page.

Searching a bit more i noticed a dutch Tex based initiative Opentaal.org which have developed a spell checker. I did contact them and waiting for a response

This package need hunspell, but my port of AbiWord only supports aspell, hspell and ispell. I've already found a dutch package on Gnu.org and compiled it here with success. I can upload it in the next days.

I have tried to use aspell from the command line. (OS4 shell)
I get
> aspell check -l en aspellch.txt
> error: standardinput is not a terminal

Is something wrong with this command line ?

Maybe aspell expects the input file through standard inut, not as a parameter. Try either "type aspellch.txt | aspell check -l en" or "aspell check -l en < aspellch.txt".

Just guessing from the error message, don't really know aspell.

Best regards,

Niels

@nbache, thanks for the suggestions
I do get
7.Datas:Teksten/BareED> aspell check -l en <aspellch
Fout: U dient een bestandsnaam op te geven.
(error you should provide a file name)
7.Datas:Teksten/BareED> type aspellch | aspell check -l en
Fout: U dient een bestandsnaam op te geven.
aspell failed returncode 20
aspell check -l en: file not executable

Now there is moe to the langage problem here:
my OS4 system can be changed easily to english or dutch.
The lines above were when OS4 language is set to english.

So the dutch text is more than probably generated by aspell.
I have not found yet how to make aspell aware ths system language is english or some other language .

Abiword is set up in Dutch , and whereas i can change the language it has to spellcheck, eg in Englissh USA i still get the behavior above.

I think AmiCygnix is set up in Dutch (at last i see some dropdown menus in dutch) and Abiword certaibly us.

Maybe i get better result if i do set ZAmiCygnix language to english?
Can this be done without a reinstall?

There is a bug in my port of aspell, sorry. If you like to get a fixed binary, send me a mail (see profile).

If you like to change the language of AmiCygnix, please refer to "Cygnix:Docs/README-language".

Thanks for the aspell executable.

The command line

>aspell check -l en aspellch

is accepted but the behavior is not straightforward under OS4

I wanted to test it under an unix shell under Cygnix but using "run sh" does not start up a shell

Wasn't there a shell icon on the lower start bar some version ago?

My implementation of ncurses is very basic, so you migth have problems with the interface. I was able to correct a file with it though.

There is no shell available for AmiCygnix and ther wasn't one before.

Me too: my first test was on a one line file and there was some mixing up of the lines aspell proposed.

U did not understand the working very weel. It'd simple after all.

Thanks a lot

thanks a lot for loading up the dutch aspell dictionnary to OS4Depot.

aspell works fine with it.

I am using aspell from the command line now for checking a lot of older texts (mostly wriiten with Notepad or BareEd) that i did never spellcheck.
Really usefull is the 'list' option printing the list of all errors

I am not sure what happened, (maybe latest update of abiword) but i have more problems checking a document against the dutch aspell (or french)
- Creating a document under Abiword and setting the language as default for checking the document works OK
- Creating a dutch or french .txt file with an other textprocessor and then importing it in Abiword, setting the language as default for checking the document works OK too
- Saving such a document as an .rtf document will retain the document's default checking language.
- For a dutch or french .rtf document created with Wordworth and loaded in Abiword, the spellchecker does not react to the proper settings and continues to check against english

I then tried to start a short or empty document inder Abiword and selecting dutch or french as default language for the document, this works ok. But then i imported a not Abiword created .txt or .rtf document (in dutch or french) , now this importing always resets the default language of the page to English (US)

Formerly i did not have any problem (never tried the import file trick though)

See User information
aspell is available for OS4.1 thanks to the cygnix effort.

It is a CLI program as well as a library.

I am improving a Gui4Cli written spellchecker usable with any editor (Notepad notably) using the CLI commands.

For sure there must be a command that gives you the list of suggestions for an erroneously written word.

I found info about it here http://www.omegahat.org/Aspell/aspell.html

However the commands proposed don't work here

8.Amiga OS 4:> aspell ("icii") -l fr
Erreur : Action inconnue : ("icii")
8.Amiga OS 4:> aspell ("icii",TRUE) -l fr
Erreur : Action inconnue : ("icii",TRUE)
8.Amiga OS 4:>
the french dictionary is installed and works well with eg the list command

I am using SAM460ex OS4.1 update 6

Can anybody confirm the results ?
or knows what would work to generate the suggestion list?
