My uA1, is there still hope for it?

Hi, i hope someone can help me solve this...

Short version: My uA1 is behaving wierd, whats wrong?

Long version: I bought an uA1 (gx, 256mb ram (Apacer)) around new year 06/07 on Ebay from a guy in Italy. Happy about finally put my hands on OS4 i started it up when i got it. I noticed it was pretty unstable so i decided to make a clean new OS4-install as the current installation was kind a messy. But unfortionally that didn't help. :(

When the machine starts normally i can sometimes have it running for hours with OS4, till it freezes totally. When it freezes like this i can't do anything at all but to pull out the powercable from the wall. Keyboard-reset, powerswitch nothing helps. Sometimes it freezes within seconds from booting up OS4. And when this happens i'll sometimes have to wait (with the powercable unplugged) for 15 to 30 minutes before i can try to start it up again.

And when it doesn't start normally, i just get a black screen, it doesn't even come to the u-boot screen. I also then hear a "click" from the internal speaker about once per second. It's like the initialization gets interrupted and tries to restart till i once again pull the powercord and wait.

This can't be a hot/cold issue as the problem occure both after several hours or when it hasen't been turned on for days. I have replaced the battery 4 times, and the voltage of them has never been under 3.02v. Tried 3 different psu's. I also tried stripping it to only motherboard, psu and monitor and the problem may still occure. That's why i am sure it isn't a software-problem.

I just lifted the cpu-module to see if i could find any visually problems but i couldn't. The same with the 256mb simm.

I know a person i can visit to try with his simm/cpu-module but he lives a bit far away and a haven't got the time yet to visit him, but i will soon.

I got a serial-output from my machine but as i'm no hardware-expert i can't really read it, can anyone else see anything strange with it? It shows the machine both booting normally into u-boot and crashing. (pretty long)

I also tried flashing the eeprom, tried a new eeprom (that didn't work at all)

The date of the machine is 030805.

Have you tried some different ram/memory.
It seems to be faultering when it get to reading the ram from what i can see in your uboot.

Also (as usual) check the battery and that the cpu fan is working fine (or is it passive cooling in a uA1 ?)... Is it "cold" enough in the case ?

Thx, but as i wrote... I replaced the battery 4 times and it was measured ok everytime. It?s not a heating problem either as it can behave as this both when it?s been turned off for days and when it?s been turned on for hours.

I bought an uA1 (gx, 256mb ram (Apacer)) around new year 06/07

Sounds like dubious memory; i.e:
http://www.intuitionbase.com/comphard.php?category=1

And the problems are compounded by the crappy cooling system!

Sorry, I know nothing about the MicroA1. My system is A1-XE.

Or is it the fact that I hadn't coffee yet and this night's sleep wasn't actually there?

Don't worry, you sure got your sleep right. ;)

We tried flashing U-boot. But went back to the old one again. We hoped the newer one had support for a pci graphicscard but it hadn't.

Today i'm off to try with another ram-module and/or another cpu-module. So hopefully i will know tonight what's causing my problems.

Cheers!

Ok, i still don't know what is causing the problem with my uA1. Now i have tested with a 100% working cpu, ram, psu and eeprom and it still won't work. :(

Now it's up to Amigacenter.

Good luck. Jean-Jacques knows what he's doing, so have hope...

It looks like RAM problem, it looks where random, maybe RAM socket is come lose, have you tried to move the RAM to different socket?
Maybe you can try down clocking your RAM speed (and CPU speed), too see if that helps.
