Scary Experience!!

Tonight I had the fright of my life,
was using my A1 surfin the net and listening to music with TuneNet and the music stopped, a long single toned note played and then the computer went black.
I reset and nothing,
I turned it off nd back on and still nothing.
Tried pulling the power lead for a few mins and tried again still nothing.
Then pressing down on cpu module, an I took out my battery, waited 30 secs reseated, powered up and she kicked back to life. pheww
Now im just wondering why?
The battery was changed just before christmas so I dont think its that yet.

It sounds like the CPU-module moved a little and caused it not to conect to the MB... but I'm probably wront ... Glad that you got it going again

I changed the CPU fan around christmas time and thort perhaps this was my fault.
Is there any way of telling if the MegArray connector is making full contact?

Hey, no scary stories at this time of the night. It's past bedtime here and I really should try to get at least a little sleepy.

Great that it was nothing serious. I would guess it was the CPU that got a little out of position.

I had to resolder my 68k socket on my CSPPC a few weeks ago, that was scary too before I fixed the problem - it was the socket and probably I had bent the card a little at some time when i dismounted or mounted it.

It made me s**t my pant to be honest actually close to tears, dunno, I may take the MB out tomorrow and check/retighten the bolts holding cpu card to motherboard.
Im just so relieved!!!!!

Phew...... Nothing worse than a hardware scare, especially as the boards cannot be (easily) replaced.

Don't forget to reset your UBoot settings (UDMA etc..)

When you have it out, sight along the board and check that the CPU module is sitting parallel to the board. The spacers supplied with the XE were slightly too short and really need to be about 0.5 mm longer to make the socket sit straight.

At least one friend has to press his CPU module back in every time he moves his machine - refuses to fix it properly :shaking head in dismay:

Have you already checked the battery voltage level? I suggest to do it. If it is less than 3V then replace it.

So it could be that I have tightened the the nut and bolt to tight, causing the module to try and pull away?
Ill have to check later.

Unlikely that you tightened it too much, but since it's only a nylon spacer, it will "creep" with time and gradually get even shorter.

If you can see that the module is crooked, perhaps it might be an idea to make a couple of simple washers out of some thin plastic (like a Chinese food take-away container or soft drink bottle) and slide them under the existing spacers without removing the module.

Don't try to use anything metallic, though. Too much breakable stuff in that area.
