Problem with Slimline CDRW/DVD Drives and MicroA1
Amigans Defender

Hi All, I've posted this elsewhere, but don't seem to be having much luck, maybe someone on here can help me.....

(in short, I had to rehouse my MicroA1 into a new case which contains a
slimline laptop drive and is connected via an interface which converts a Laptop ide socket, to a normal ide 2.5")

The HD is connected via the MicroA1 Primary 3.5" IDE Interface.
the CD/DVD Drive is connected via the secondary 2.5" Interface.

The problem I have is that I have tried two drives on being a Sony Model
No. CRX880A and a TSSTCor Prod Drive. (In either case, the disc will not
boot as it keeps coming up with an Error "Unknown Sense Key 05 ASC 24 ASCQ
00=4096 <-- 4096 appears in red.

I am using uboot 1.2.0

If anyone has any ideas as to how I can get these slimline cd rw/dvd rom
drives to work, i'd be most grateful

Cheers

I have around 6 slimline drives here from various laptops, and they all do the same. There's nothing you can do about it, the CD code in uboot blows chunks!

Thank you Rigo, At least someone has bothered to reply to me - I appreciate it.

Now - shall I just kick the MicroA1 into the dustbin - Probably not a bad idea.

@ Mickey

Why not just kick the slimline drive into the dustbin. (Less expensive)

Why not do what we did in the classic days, just run an ide and power cable out of the back (at least you won't have to modify the case like with 500/1200's) and use an internal dvd/rw as an external? You would only need to connect it on the rare occasions when you need to boot from cd if you think it would look ugly.

@Mikey

You should have utilised my full-size drive for booting when you had the chance!

Do you really not have one lying around you can connect up temporarily to boot from? You only need to boot from it once (maybe twice) and then disconnect it.

Well to be honest...

Okay I opened the case up, added a normal size CDRW/Drive on to the IDE primary channel which also has the Hard drive. This allowed me to run a boot disk so I can sort the mess out.

The really bloody annnoying thing is that once I had sorted it out, hooked the slim line dvd drive back on (to the 2.5 inch Primary channel), removed the bigger cd drive, closed it all up and rebooted....

....I had set the MicroA1 to boot from cd/dvd rom drive by default in U-Boot... (The slimline drive also had a boot disk in it) The MicroA1 booted off the slimline cd/dvd drive!!!!

WTF!!!

So I am glad I am up and running again. But peeved that my MicroA1 seems to be having a laugh at my expense.
