IPP Printing

I have a Lexmark 736dn connected to my router. My wife's mac is hardwired to the router and she can print to it. My window 7 box and a machine running Knoppix 6* can print to it wirelessly. The only way I have found to print to it from my Sam440ep, which is connected to the router, is to open cups on my linux machine convert print jobs to pdf in ram and copy the pdf file to ipp0:. It works, but it is rather cumbersome. Does anyone know a more elegant way to do this?

os4depot has ipp archive/device. Haven't tested it. I'm using os4depot lpr.device with and old HPLaserJet-2300n

The mention of ipp0: suggests that's already installed. So... if copying a PDF there is working, then printing to a PostScript driver with the port set to ipp.device should also work.

I believe I have tried various postscript drivers without success. Do you have any in mind?
When I try to print ps files I get ghostscript error. It is not clear to me which of thevarious gs flavors one should use with pcc.

And yet it sounds like you are printing through your loonix machine??

My question: why not determine what your printer's IP address
is and print directly from your Amiga to the printer?

At home and work I print to HP LaserJets using LPR and either the
postscript and PCL drivers in the OS, Pagestream (when it works)
and AmiPDF/AmiGS/Ghostscript.

Granted LPR does have known issues printing more than a few pages
at a time. I think that it has to do with the size of the printer's
buffer and LPR not being able to internally buffer output.

It may be that the IPP driver may serve your situation better.

All of this can take a lot of annoying, mind bending testing to
determine what combination of drivers, modes and settings will
work best for you, your printer and what you want to print.

Start simple and then test every higher level...

- can if you ping your printer (the IP addy is good)?
- set up LPR/IPP to talk to that known good IP address.
- see if you can copy a few words of plain ASCII text to
the IPP/LPR device (do you have a connection)?
- see if you can make a simple postscript file with AmiPDF
and then copy it to the IPP/LPR device.
- see if you can set up a config in AmiPDF/AmiGS to print
directly to the IPP/LPR device (f.e., set "Output file" to LPR:).
- see if you can set up a PS or PCL AmigaOS printer config
to the IPP/LPR device.
- go back and try the tests with the other driver (LPR or IPP).

At least your printer looks very capable and should be Amiga
compatible.

Just the standard one which comes with OS4. Printer prefs should something like the screenshot below.

You can try a PCL driver too (HP LaserJet 4 is pretty standard) - CUPS should translate it (although I've never tested this).

You shouldn't get Ghostscript errors with the OS printer driver, it's a self-contained binary.

I can ping the printer, but then you lose me. I don't know what you mean
when you say set IPP to talk to that IP address.

If you can ping to your printer from AOS. Then maybe try Chris' suggestion:

1)download from os4depot lpr.device (http://www.os4depot.net/share/utility/print/lpr_dev.lha)

2)create an 'ENVARC:lpr.device' file (plain text, your printer IP in HOST):
HOST=192.168.1.230 RAW

3)set in printer preferences as in Chris's image and then try to print something using maybe MultiView or another tool/program.

Heavy testing the printer/driver & lpr/netprinter.device would involve printing a pdf from amipdf through "workbench printer".

That normally killed either ghostscript or the netprinter.device for me (not anymore)

Maybe it won't work with your setup, but take a look here.

See it as a step-by-step guide.

I got many problems using lpr.device myself, but using netprinter and adapting/altering some of the printer's own settings, it got it to work, even printing from AmiPDF and multiple pages (granted, PDF conversion is still slow as hell, but it doesn't crash on my anymore)

It's good that you can reach your printer with ping.
At least that means you shouldn't be suffering networking
issues.

I'd suggest following jabirulo's advice at least to start.
Install LPR to the IP address you found to work. It's a
basic protocol that might be good enough for testing.

Next step, you could try using IPP instead if LPR doesn't
work well enough.

Unfortunately network printing on the Amiga reveals how
many steps and different paths there can be in that process.

That's why I suggest you start with the simplest type of
printing possible, Just to send "HELLO WORLD" ASCII text
to the printer.

Then you can move on to more sophisticated methods like
AmiPDF, AmigaOS apps and Pagestream.

Just a suggestion.
