mapparium.lha removed

The mapparium.lha file has been removed from OS4Depot after a request from the original author.

In this instance the file apparently ended up being distributed by the Amiga Future Magazine as public domain since "it was uploaded on OS4Depot" even though the author had never given consent for this.

I urge whomever is uploading files anonymously to OS4Depot to take care in finding out whether uploading is permitted by the original author or not.

I noticed that "thefryingpan.lha" recently uploaded to OS4Depot has an old readme that contains links that are outdated and no longer valid. The homepage listed in the top description is also no longer valid. It would be nice if uploader would list the current location and info for the program. There is an opensource project at Sourceforge which was moved to a googlecode repository and then moved to several different repositories at github. It would be nice to know the true source of "thefryingpan".

Not much I can do about that. If you have any information you can post it here and I'll update the readme data.

I haven't been able to determine the exact source and was just hoping that "uploader" would see my post and update the readme.

Can you block uploads by "uploader"? Whomever is uploading should be required to use an identifiable name/alias and email address so they can be contacted with any problems relating to archives such as these. Otherwise, the uploader field is pointless.

The e-mail address field is mandatory, so Orgin should be able to contact the uploader, assuming that field was filled in with valid information (if not, then perhaps reject uploads with invalid info in the future).

Uploader always specifies a fake email address.

You brought up this discussion before, it ended with people wanting to keep the "uploader" otherwise many stuff wont get uploaded to OS4Depot.

If you want to get control back just block them and don't allow uploading without a proper registstration to your site.

I don't think many people would mind anyway as most of them will use the site for downloading.

You can't be sure that anyone won't use that "uploader" for malign purposes in the future.

My two cents

please don't allow "fake" users to upload. plain simple.
what is the problem in specifying a correct name and email address? really...

I didn't agree with that in a previous discussion but I agree now. Some malicious individual could upload destructive malware. The "uploader" may have good intentions but others may not.

I'd say leave the "uploader" stuff that's already on OS4Depot but change the policy for any future uploads. If someone wants to be anonymous then I'd be suspicious of their motives.

well, "uploader" can upload whatever he wants. he just needs to identify himself. easy. just no longer anonymous. does not seem to be too complicated i think.

Would be nice to get some reaction from "Uploader", I just don't know how to make contact.

I don't think "uploader" is a single person.

It may have been back when he/she created the login name, but nowadays i know that mayn people claim to upload stuff through the name.

I'm with xenic here.
Leave the stuff that's already been uploaded and act according to devs that want their stuff removed, but block it from now on and request an email verification for new users (or maybe even old - maybe thats already in place?).

I don't think anyone would mind if they need to register once more

There is an announcement at http://www.amigafuture.de/viewtopic.php?p=59378#59378 that states the availability of thefryingpan on OS4Depot. If you click on the "Profile" at the bottom there appears to be a "PM" button. Maybe you could PM HelmutH there and ask if he uploaded the file.

The AF announcement says that it was made available on OS4Depot by Tomasz Wiszkowski.

Not really getting anywhere here.

Anyway I'm going to try to find time to make an administrative addition to OS4Depot where I can store verified email addresses.

Once that is done the system will check the email of all new uploads against the verified list. If it's not in there then the email address will have to be verified before the file can be approved.
