Jar files are just normal zip-files. use your favorite zip unpacker to unarchive it.

.class are the java binaries. this is compiled java code.

.mf is a manifest files that tells the java launcher a bit about the jar file, such as which class contains the start function.

Can these be used on os4.1 to access a network atached storage device plus i have found out that the NAS uses SMB as its network so possible ftp or other connection.

Most likely no.

You'll better off trying to use samba if it supports that. Mikey_C has written a guide on how to set up samba on os4.x, try contacting him for the guide.

Maybe you can tell us your NAS model and manufacturer in order for us to find a way to access it.

I suppose you have installed this Java soft on your other systems, what does it do exactly ? Isn't it just a GUI system that would enable you to do automatic backups or such ?

Just to dig them up and get them some light again...
There were some struggles to bring JAVA to Amiga, none of them were finished due to the amount of dependencies.

I can remember one: JAmiga by Peter Weno
Unfortunately it seems this one is stuck in the year 2006 :-/

Jamiga isn't "in a usable form".

I know, neither is MERAPI, Kaffee and all the others. i Just wanted to list the projects that were started so far, but i think it doesn't so any good?

I wonder if MERAPI sources are still available from H&P (iirc this was the most developed of the lot)

Mickey's Samba guide is (mostly) for creating a Samba SERVER. Since he already has a NAS (with a Samba server on it), what he wants is a Samba CLIENT.

Luckily we have SMBFS as a Samba client.

FTP Mount is also worth looking at as an FTP client.

you wont get any help from H&P, I have been in contact with them in other matters since they don't do anything for the Amiga anymore, but they are not interested in any deals.

JAVA has been proposed as a bounty already but we honestly haven't had time to look at it yet. http://amigabounty.net/?function=viewproject&projectid=32

It won't be the next bounty I can tell you that already but I find JAVA to be very important so I hope we will get the bounty running at some point.

You are welcome to open a new JAVA thread in the amigabounty forum here, it would be nice to hear peoples opinion on this.

The lack of Java is a key weakness with OS4.1, perhaps not as key as the lack of Flash but it's up there. Am surprised there hasn't been a bounty running on it since the launch of OS4.1!

I'm not saying you're wrong but if there's something I'd call the "key weakness" of OS4.1, it's the USB stack. The fact that only one in five flash disks works is just {insert-your-favourite-derogatory-adjective}.
