Do we still need AmiUpdate now that Update 1 is here? Or is that what ringhio is for? I'm a bit confused

it has nothing to do the one with the other.

do you need windows update after a service pack update?
of course you do. it's shame that amiupdate is not officially integrated in os4.

No. Ringhio means on screen messages.

I keep on hearing this, and I'd like to know how "integrating" it into OS4 would give any more benefits than are available now, and what you mean exactly by "integrating"?

I think hes talking about having it in the Utilities drawer by default

I fail to see why this is such a great move, but if you want it in Utilities, put it there yourself.

Bundling any software with the OS on a CD is soon to be out of date. AmiUpdate is available to everyone, for free, from it's own website. I see no obvious benefit in sticking it on a CD with the OS.

Well as "integrated" i would think a sort of method to download OS4 updates using directly AmiUpdate instead to download things from Hyperion's website

So if then, putting AmiUpdate on OS4 CD could be justificable

it's not only this. i know a lot of os4 user which don't know about amiupdate
or they afraid to use it. it's mature enough to be part of the os
so everybody will know and use it.
and it has the ability to autoupdate it's self so there is no problem to be out of date etc.

This has absolutely nothing to do with "integration". There is no reason why it cannot be used to update the system as it stands right now, it doesn't need to be in utilities to achieve this.

It simply takes the system updates to be added to the public database.

AmiUpdate would be useful to push out critical system fixes (such as quick fix update) fairly easy to end users.

But I guess it's also easy to download it from Hyperion's site :)

If you read my post above, it says that there is no technical reason why this cannot be done right now, as you well know.

we know it very well, and this is a way to tell you that we appreciate this piece of software
and the work you have done so far on it, so don't be so negative...

That's true but also because that would be better to have it on OS4'CD as standard component, think also that it can be an incentive for Hyperion to make their updates availible directly via AmiUpdate

AFAIK at the moment OS4's updates are availible via AmiUpdate only to the betatesters ...

The updates available to betatesters are experimental and you wouldn't want to release them to the public until they've been tested for several months without a problem.

So you need two repositories - one experimental for betatesters and one for public release. We effectively have that already, with our habit of releasing a new Update about every six months or so.

Yes, you could leave the responsibility of updates to AmiUpdate, but it's better controlled to release all updates together on a CD, so we can be sure that everyone gets the same installation.

Hi Rigo,

Speaking of AmiUpdate, I am using Version 1.120 (updated to by it?self) and since it has updated I am getting DSI errors.

I can send you GR report if you wish.
Ciao,
Trev Daley.

oops, I should give some more details....

Program starts up fine.
Click on ?Scan? and I get GR.
From then on no more GR until I restart the program (probibly because I clicked on ?Ignore DSI errors?)

AmigaOS 4.1 update 1 brought together many third-party
programs, some of your own, as well as AISS and the OpenAmiga pointers.

Why coulnd't AmiUpdate have been added as well to the update? I see it as a perefectly good candidate. But I
might be missing some crucial information here.

Of course, this AmiUpdate would NOT have access the
system beta files.

Anyway, many thanks for your hard work on the OS
as well as CodeBench, and of course AmiUpdate.

Regards,
Kotler

Same here and the worth is that we don't know if after clicking "ignore DSI errors" it really looks for updates.

Maybe, the solution is that until no new version of AmiUpdate is available we should "Roll back" on a previous version and manage the "ignore update" if it is included.
