I just checked my e-mail yesterday, I guess what I found a e-mail from AmigaKit,

but what graphic card to buy? 6570 or 6870?
what should I buy.

I guess 6450 card is useless for 3D.

Good question. I saw the price difference between that two and I'm not sure whether the difference really fits to the performance difference or not. I would pick the 6570.

And what about the "simple" passively cooled 5450 ?

i'm waiting mine next week, and I took this card for the passive cooling (want the minimum of noise)

i just realize that when you wrote 6450, you maybe wanted to write 5450?

I would suggest reviewing the wikipedia page on ATI gpus:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ati_gpu# ... ands_.28HD_6xxx.29_series

The 6870 is a much faster card, but with the extra power requirements to go with it.

Having tested over a dozen cards from the 4xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx and 7xxxx Radeon HD range my current favourites are:-

the passively cooled Sapphire HD5670, the half-height, single slot Sapphire HD6570 and the passively cooled Sapphire HD7750. These cards deliver a good balance between power, performance and noise level (i.e. no noise with the two passively cooled cards). In addition the HD5670 and HD6570 cards are both compatible with the most recent Linux kernel created by Darren Stevens, which is a nice little bonus. The two passively cooled cards take up more space but the HD5670, due to its form factor, does not use a second slot.

The 6850 is also a nice single slot card but does include an additional cooling fan.

A 6450 can do 3D; just don't expect much performance-wise. I've said it often enough, the low-end of each series really is low-end. They're designed to be cheap, low-power, and low performance. Since you are interested in 3D stuff, this the low-end cards are probably not right for you.

The cards that Trevor listed are probably the best bet for most people, particularly those who are unsure what to get.

High-end cards (e.g., Radeon HD 6850, 7850 or better) are for those into heavy gaming and graphics-intensive stuff. ** Anyone in this category probably already knows what they want.

Hans

** Yes, I expect developers to get to work bringing new stuff to AmigaOS once MESA + Gallium3D is released, including software that brings the cards to their limits.

Why the sad face? It's a powerful card.

Yes, i know, i just looked her up...mighty beast, 2 slots wide

The sad face was because Trevor doesn't mention it as one of the Linux supported cards.

Will this one be Gallium/3D supported? New Warp3D supported?

Don't be sad. I haven't tested a 6870 but as it's based on the Bart's chipset (as is the 6850) it may be OK for Linux use.

I chose 6570 for myself. I'm not into deep 3D stuff anyway, I just wanted to have a good performance for daily use. I hope that this card will do the job just fine.

I also chose the 6570 and even though it has a fan it is very very quiet, and small. I just wish for overlay to speed up video playback which I find disappointingly slow. I expected the X1000 to be at least %400 as fast for video playback due to faster CPU and MUCH faster RAM, but I'd say it's only 50% faster than the XE G4/933, which means it can't do 720p h264

For modern 3D maybe, but I ran OpenAreana on one at 900x1600 and got 50+ frames a second. As Hans has said these are very low end, but also several generations later than the cards we are used to. The 6450 f.e. is about 2x faster than a top end 9200 series card. A 6870 is 10x the performance of a 6450.

The 6570 is nice BTW, single slot and quite quiet. I expect the 6870 is a dual-slot monster.

As always with graphics cards, buy what you can afford/live with.

Welcome to the Club!

Darren

Whlle we are on the subject...

Is the onboard sound useable or will there be a soundcard fitted?
Same question but for Ethernet (i think it was Ethernet which was lacking drivers back then)

What kind of cards can one plug in the 33MHz PCI slots?

I think both an extra sound card and a network card is still fitted.

I'm planning for a CatWeasel MK4+ when my PCI slots will be empty.

Yes, that would have been my next question, if a Catwesel MKIV can be used (probably need to get floppy first)

I'd like to migrate with as much hardware i can from the XE

So the drivers for onboard sound and ethernet are still being developed, i hope?

@Liveforit...

I just got a question.

When did you apply for a X1000 ?

I did that in beginning of April and got an email in June telling me I was registered as interested in
ordering the next batch of AmigaOne X1000.

Now I haven´t heard anything and I sent another email to Amigakit for more than a week ago but no answer at all. Nothing not even a reply as they are busy.

Still want to buy the X1000 but I just wonder how much I have to do to get a reply from Amigakit.
