FE and Broken Cluster Geometry
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

See User information
Hi,
I'm trying to install FE on my X1000.

No CD problem, no installation problem on a new SFS2 partition, DH6 (OS4.1.6 is still on my DH0: partition and, hopefully, still runs great).

I activate the multi-boot option under CFE (QUIET = N) that shows me 4.1.6 and FE options.

But when I boot OS4 FE I encounter a requester "Volume has broken Cluster Geometry  ! Can't mount it !" and the Workbench doesn't load.

Regarding my partition scheme (pictures below), is something is wrong ?

Thank you by advance for your help
Guillaume

First, SFS/02 IS NOT a good idea unless you really need it, which for a boot partition you don't. Just because it's newer doesn't mean you must use it, SFS/00 has stood the test of time as a hard working boot partition for the entire life of OS4 whereas SFS/02 is relativly untested.

I don't know whether the boot from the first 4gb rule still applies but your partition is way past that.

I recommend you backup DH0:, format it as SFS/00 and install FE there.

Having 600 Tampons on the drive is just hilarious to english speakers

I don't understand the english "tampon" joke but I don't speak about boot partition but system partition.

My boot partition (where amigaboot.of resides) is BDH0/DOS7 formatted.

My actual system 4.1.6 partition (DH0) is too SFS2 formatted.
Regarding Buffers = 600, it's the MediaToolbox default but I think that it's just the french "600 tampons" that make you react.
What is the meaning of this UK joke please ?

Regarding 4gb limit, is it for the Boot or for the System partition ?

Thank you

My boot partition is SFS/02, so that isn't an issue.**

@zzd10h

Do you know which partition it's talking about? I did a quick internet search, and others who got that error message were usually working with a FAT/FAT32 (i.e., MS DOS) partition.

A few things to look at:
- The EXT\03 and SWP partitions are both called "dhx", that could cause trouble
- Did you accidentally make one of the two swap partitions automountable?
- Make sure that the partition block sizes are correct (512 is correct for SFS). That error message can be triggered by oversized blocks

By 'boot partition' I mean the partition you 'boot' the OS from not the SLB equivalent where amigaboot.of resides.

As for the Tampon joke... Google will explain...

Quote:

It used to be for SYS: as the SLB (amigaboot.of) was stored in the RDB. I don't know if CFE can read above 4gb to find the SYS: partition.

People seem to have a big problem backing up SYS:, formatting and installing FE on it...

Maybe I'm just an old school amigan, I'd rather use the tried and very well tested SFS/00 for SYS: as there is no need for 4gb+ files on SYS: or a partition bigger than 128gb, 1gb is more than enough. SFS/02 is just SFS/00 that's been 'tweaked' to allow bigger file and partition size, how reliable it is only time will tell.

This message occurs when I try to boot on my DH6 partition.
I'm certain that it's like my working DH0 partition. I just retried with the exact same "tampon" settings, 2000.
But it stills fails.

To summarize,
DH0 SFS2 boot well
DH6 SFS2 doesn't boot.

@Severin
OK for tampon joke, it should be a french word.
We use the same word for the same thing.

"People seem to have a big problem backing up SYS:, formatting and installing FE on it..."

No, "people" backups their stuff, but "people" want to have 2 OS levels on the same computer.

CFE unable to read after the 4gb limit ?
It seems that it's possible as my WB loads and issue a error requester. Or I'm wrong ?

I have no idea, has the splash screen shown? what happens if you hold down ctrl while booting, do you get to a shell window?

The messages could be from kickstart not workbench.

Yes the new FE splash screen shows and the WB begins to start normally. The WB top border is present but the requester appears and if I click "OK". The system freezes.

I will try CTRL later, I have "work" to do on 4.1.6 for the moment.

Thank you

Hi,
Yes, for the Linux kernels.
Why ? Could it be the problem with FE ?

Thank you

I have one of the boot partitions behind many others where some of them are over 100GB in size working fine many years. I don't use SFS2 currently at all.

Maybe your hard drive itself has some problems.

Interesting that you use a SWAP partition on X1000? I thought that it was unecessary on the X1000 with 2GB of RAM.

I know this problem. Remove the CF Card to confirm it goes away.

It should fix the error message.

Basically if the cf card is larger than the formatted capacity (eg. 8Gb card but formatted 4GB FAT for linux kernels) AmigaOS seems to have issues with the geometry. Of course 4GB is the limit for FAT formatting.

You can format the CF card as Amiga (it formats it as 8GB), this also fixes the issue, but will then prevent you booting linux on it..

Other option is to use a CF card FAT formatted using the full space - eg. 2 or 4GB CF card formatted to use the full capacity.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, but I have this CF card formatted like that since 2013.
And I don't have problem with 4.1.6.

But I will try to remove the CF card when I will be able to shutdown my X1000.

edit :

ddni
I don't remember why I added this swap partition, maybe to try to solve these "out of memory" problem of X1000 (without success).

TSK :
maybe you are right, I don't hope.

AmigaOS4.1.6 can't see the cf card at all on the X1000, which is why it was not a problem before. FE can see the CF card now.

I just removed my CF card.
No more the "Broken Cluster" message but, now, I have a WB Preferences requester saying "Unable to open ENV:Sys/workbench.prefs".
And freezes !

When booting with CTRL and the 2 mouse buttons pressed (to be sure), i obtain the boot menu. Go for "no startup sequence boot"
-> i reach a CLI window but on my 4.1.6 partition (???)

Edit : in the CTRL boot options, i selected DH6: instead of DH0:, now I reach the CLI of FE partition at boot without startup-sequence

I made another test.
In boot menu, i selected DH6 (my FE partition) but instead of "boot without startup", I clicked "boot"

And, FE boots fine.

But is somebody knows how to boots FE automatically withmy setup ?

Thank you

PS : at least it seems that my HD is not broken and that my partition is fine.
