I think that none of this systems work reliably, in both ways (copy on boot unless you make a new one everytime, and copy before editing) you can discover trashed sources too late. I think it's better to have a manual save when important changes are made, because the Murphy (PV) law state: "You find the trouble just a moment to late"
Oh and with subversion it's only a matter of simple: svn -m "" ci for save a new version and subversion saves only changes, so no wasted hd spaces and work well for executables and binary data like images audio files and so on
