Animating on AmigaOS4.1
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
Hi Everyone,

I'm playing catchup mode now that I have an AmigaOne system :)
I'm looking at different approaches to animating on the AmigaOS 4.1.

Can we use any USB webcam such as any from Logitech? from my quick search in this forum we can't as yet? The concept for the camera capture is to point it at a flat surface and draw with a laser light.

I realise I can use other non Amiga devices such as my phone but my focus is seeing what I can do on the Amiga.

My backup plan is to use PPaints animation tool but this will be slower.

Any advice is most appreciated.

IIRC, there are a few select old USB webcams that work. Webcams using the USB video/webcam standard don't work.

If you're good at drawing by hand, then I think that some Wacom tablets may work. Broadblues should be able to tell you which graphics tablets are supported, as his SketchBlock program supports them.

Hi Hans,

Good to know that it might be possible using webcams, thanks for the info.

Do have the an older wacom working with PPaint and Sketcblock, the wacomtablet.lha from OSDepot works well.

Will contact Broadblues as I have found some interesting artifacts in PPaint.

It is good to hear that I am not the only one using a NG Amiga for art and animation.

AFAIK those older webcams only allow single shots to be taken so they're suitable for the old style point it out the window and leave it running permanently updating every few seconds/minutes type applications. streaming video from web cams does not work as the usb stack does not support it.

Great work! Looking forward to see your next work.

ImageFX 4.5 has an animation capability via the layers system. It has some tools for mpegs but those are dated.

Cheers,
Bill

@interrogative

What software are you using for animation on AmigaOS?

For the following animation, I used...

Rending Time and Space

ImageFX 4.5 Studio
Cinemorph 2.6
Aladdin 4D 5.1 Alpha 6 (only worked on pre OS4.1 update 6. Does not work under FE)
Digital Universe 1.7
FFShop 0.5

I also used the following on a PC.
Lyapunovia 1.5 under WinUAE
Moviemaker

I made the animation in order to prove that old software is still very useful, and that we can be productive on NG systems. The only new software written specifically for OS4.x that I used was Digital Universe and FFShop. Almost everything else was old 68k software running under OS4.x Petunia or WinUAE.

In the 1990s, when I had an A4000/040, I could not conceive of animating such a project without additional hardware (VT4000, TBC, etc.). Processing thousands of frames with ImageFX and FFShop is much easier and faster nowadays on NG systems and emulated systems.

I somewhat wonder if my little animation had anything to do with A-Eon picking up both ImageFX and Aladdin for further development. Whether Trevor or Matthew were influenced or not, I'm glad they are updating the software so that someday I can do better animations.

Before I followed the link I thought this was about "Aegis Sonix" from the good old days.

But then I realised it is not the famous synthesizer software by Aegis, but some sort
of WebCam software.

Can you explain why the name "Sonix" was picked for it?
Is it somehow related to "Aegis Sonix"?
