How to? Make Rexx script to run C:download and designate working directory and pass link?

Hello fellow Amigans,

I don't like the download manager that is bundled with Odyssey, it crashes sometimes and I prefer to use the download executable from OS4Depot. I thought I could simply move copy the executable to the directory where I store my installation lha files, and add "Install:dl %l" as a contextmenu item in Odyssey. It works great, downloading starts, but I have no idea where Odyssey or OS4 has determined that the download executable will be using as a working directory.

I litterally know nothing about Rexx, so coming into this blindly. Any guiding hand out there that can help would be greatly appreciated. And I would thank you in advance for introducing me into the world of Rexx scripting!

What is your Odyessey installation ?

I can download many files without any crash.

But if you plan to try everything you can from OS4Depot, you'll encounter som troubles at some points. Take your time.

I downloaded Download.lha from OS4Depot, extracted the archive and copied the "download" binary to ram: before adding this contextmenu to Odyssey:

I went to OS4Depot, moved my mouse pointer over an archive name and used the Download context menu to download the file. It download to ram: as I specified. I think the DEST argument was the key to downloading to the specified location.

Filer also has a built in OS4Depot browser.

I run into problems with the download manager in Odyssey when I am trying to download many files at once. The whole of Odyssey goes into a mode where everything is very slow to respond. The files continue to download, and if you don't restart or close the browser, they will complete, but the download tool there on OS4Depot is much more reliable.

Thank you very much for the GUI recommendation, I tried it out and it doesn't play well with my machine, OS4.1 FE x5000... Sad...

The application launches and I can choose where I would like the app to place new downloads, but after trying to select a file to download, or if I use the search, grim reaper.

How does one access the built in OS4 browser in Filer?

From the manual:

$OS4DEPOT [ON/OFF/RECENT] - Turn on, off OS4Depot view or show recent files

Create a user button using that command. You might need to set an OS4Depot: assign as well if I remember correctly. It uses wget to download files so you need that installed as well.

I've used OS4DepotGui and I got no crash. Maybe it is related to the NgFileSystem.

But I got a crash with the search function.

Regarding Odyssey, I can download many files at once and even if CPU usage is high, I can still use the system. When download ares finished, everything is ok.
