PCIex1 Envy24ht sound cards like those used in the Sam460ex/Cr seem to be the most reliable.
Outside of that it can be hit or miss.
RTL PCI 8139 or PCIex1 8168 Ethernet cards.
RTL PCI 8169 Ethernet cards works to but has issues under Linux with more than 3GB of Ram.
See thread below re what users have got to work and what does not work

Another thread about sound card problems that is worth a read.

@Antique

Ah, your X5000 should have come with a network card already. There isn't a driver yet for onboard ethernet, so AFAIK all dealers are supplying one.

Hi @Antique

The Envy24HT cards Spectre pointed out are also the best quality cards that you can buy for AmigaOS 4, Envy24HT is the only supported chip on OS4 that supports 24 bit depth with 192000hz sampling rate.

The Envy24HT is also available on 'regular' Pci cards, such as the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 / 7.1, a nice fit for the Pci slots on the X5000

Even Pcie x1 is more than three times faster than the old Pci interface.
(500 MB per sec vs 133MB per sec)

In my opinion it would be a waste to use one of the Pcie x1 slots for just a soundcard, so I would make it a priority to find a Pci Envy24HT card instead of a Pcie x1 card.

On your system partition should be a list of Envy24HT cards that are reported to work

System partition (OS4)>Documentation>AHI>Envy24HT.doc

Another safe bet is to use a card based on the CS4281 chip,
which is capable of 16 bit at a samplerate of 48000hz.
Here is a thread in which m1nuto, a X5000 user, got a CS4281 card to work.

There I also go indepth about the Soundblaster 128 and Live!

If you bought a complete system then it is likely to be supplied with a CMI8738 soundcard and you might have to enable it in the AHI prefs.

"Envy24HT is the only supported chip on OS4 that supports 24 bit depth with 19200hz sampling rate"

Except the builtin HDAudio on an X1000, of course.

All due respect, I can't compare the Juli@ to any onboard sound I have ever heard including the hd variants. Actually I think you also recommended such a card at some point.

I'd love to recommend the X1000 but that is a rather expensive soundcard ;)

Why not; since you've recommended a sound card supported by an AHI driver that supports 19200hz samplerate, which is less than half the samplerate (44100hz) supported by other drivers

No wonder SRtest can't compare Juli@ to any onboard sound, since the Envy24HT driver that supports Juli@ has half the samplerate of most drivers

I agree all around.
The Juli@ is a sweet card with great output stages.
I also agree that the X1000 is an expensive sound card.

Just to offer a sliver of argument, the X1000 supports optical audio out, which moves the "output stages" off the computer completely, without needing even a common ground, so that's nice.

But we are getting deep here. I doubt many would build enough audio gear around their Amiga to notice these details.

Or at least not many besides me. :)
Perhaps one day I'll show off some of the newer stuff. :)
