Backup question

The problem: I have a 200GB DOS\07 volume I want to backup to an SMB shared FAT32 volume.
The solution : Lha to shared volume (file flags & comments preserved to a strange FS).

Unsolvable issues :
1. How do you split the .lha to multiple volumes ( v2.15 seems problematic) ?
2. How do you exclude directories from om archive (e.g. Trashcan)? -W Exclude filenames seems also broken.

Solution:
1) lha your data to a local HDD (if it takes that much into one lha file, that is)
2) "Sploin" them to smaller chunks
3) Copy them over

The easiest way is to create a temporary drawer on the source volume and move eveything you want to backup into it. Then use:

lha a -3reFV1073741824 dest:archive.lha source:temp/

-3 = Use -lh6- compression
-r = recursive
-e = archive empty directories
-F = Use fast progress display
-V = Enable/set multivolume size(KB)

this should give you upto 200 archive files of 1GB each.

Do you explicitely *need* to lha it?

If not you can use the great Backup tool from OnyxSoft.
It does a file per file copy while taking care of (soft/hard) links as well.
I've never tested it on a foreign partition, otoh smbfs should work like a "native" AmigaOS4 partition anyway.

Yes, I use BackUp regularly to back up my files to a SMB drive. It works perfectly well, and even asks you if it's a FAT32 volume to prevent unnecessary copying of files due to discrepancies with the timestamps.

The only issue with it is that it uses some prefiltering hooks in the file requester, which make it very slow to select a destination drawer on the SMB volume, and sometimes it fails completely, in which case you have to cancel the file requester and open it again.

Hmm, just for the sake of trying i fired up Backup and chose a directory on my smb mounted ntfs hdd.

The file requester is as fast as it is on the local partitions, but that may be because of the smb beta version i'm using

Yep, possibly. It could also be a side-effect of the directory structure on the NAS (or lack thereof in my case...) I have a lot of files and drawers that have to be examined as the requester populates its list.

What version of smbfs are you using?

Ah, ok, i'm using a NTFS formatted 2,5" HDD on my FritzBox router as NAS.

With this backup tool, I can make one backup of all files and drawers in an USB drive with Fat32 format, and after how I can restore the backup in a format partition disk?

Due to Backup's functionality (it's basically a COPY CLONE of all your files/drawers/links) you simply do a COPY CLONE from your backup to your formatted drive.
