Setting up a games competition
Quite a regular

Hi everyone,

I'm considering launching a gaming contest on my blog (Gaming on AmigaOS 4) with some small prices. Nothing big, just for fun.

A problem though is to make it fair and correct to everyone participating. We could do screenshots here in this thread, but the ideal would be an Online highscore list of some kind where the scores are drawn directly from the game. The games on AmiBoing by Entwickler X are great in this respect, but not all of us have access to them. There is also Battle Squadron, but once again, not easy to get hold of these days.

I was therefore wondering if any of you have any suggestions or input in connection with this? Would be great to hear what you think. If you think posting scores or screenshots in a thread is ok, we can do that. It is not like anyone would get rich from winning a game or something, hehe.

Will do some promotion for this on other sites too - maybe it can get some people to turn on their AmigaOne's or Sam's again to join in on the fun.

Great idea! I've done the Lemon game comps a few times and enjoyed it. Would love to see an OS 4 one.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Thanks! Glad you like the idea. Have been looking around for a suitable game and I think I found one. Quite a while ago I got a suggestion from 328gts about Blastaway by RETREAM - this game should be something for everyone, since it does not require any high-end AmigaOS 4 hardware and that it is free to download.

https://retream.itch.io/blastaway

Looks great too!

Do you think sharing scores in a new "competition thread" would be sufficient?

ah you beat me to it Actually ALL of RETREAM’s games are now free to download and all Simone is asking is a donation to offer some support to somebody who is a victim of any kind of violence. This was a response to the Russian war in Ukraine.

Blastaway, Huenison, SkillGrid, KOG, and BOH we’re all made on OS4 and are just awesome quality games to boot!

AmiBoing games rock too so lots of great games to play on our OS4 machines and just like EAB & Lemon there doesn’t have have to be actual prizes as the prize is the chance to have your initials on the top spot

IMHO submitting a picture of your screen score/ time is more than good enough for us honest amigans eh

Looks nice!!!

I have build a very very simple shooter (SDL2) that can submit to a web the hiscore #1.

It's just a port (with some changes) from the excellent SDL2 tutorial from Parallel Realities. [https://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/tutorials/#shooter]

Game
**********
Just shoot at enemies and collect (P) to increase your score. Player bullets on screen are reduced when player gets more points.
It can submit the highscore #1 (SUBMIT_HIGHSCORE tooltype) when quitting the game (http://jabirulo.byethost13.com/hs/shooter15).

http://jabirulo.byethost13.com/temp/sdl2/shooter15_1.51.7z (updated exec)

Don't know how it will work on "old" AmigaONEs on my SAM460 works fine.

Feel free to test it.

Thanks for mentioning my games!
BOH and Huenison might be particularly suitable as they already have their own online standings: BOH standings Huenison hiscores.

@328gts

Thanks also for telling me about this thread :)
Just one little note for the sake of precision: SkillGrid was not developed on AmigaOS 4, but on AmigaOS 3 ;)

Night of the Zombies is a nice game to have a competition on.

I am in @AmigaOldSkooler. No need for prizes, it's all about good times.

@jabirulo

Tried your game (Thanks!), looks fun but hard to play without joystick. I took a look in the gamecontrollerdb.txt and only one joystick is set up for Amiga. Is there a way to add some other joystick configurations? Also, after closing the game, OWB will open up, but I am not sure if it is going to some central repository to save or just randomly shows scores (most of the entries were anonymous except my own scores)? It is not the same score table as from your link above.

This was tested on X5000.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

After reading all the replies it seems to me like the best way is to have a competition area on this forum like they have on Lemon and EAB.

Maybe we could have a section for this under "Games"?

What do you think about that?

We could have one competition each month or every second month and then have complete standings in the course of a year?
