My 10 year old daughter is getting into chess in a big way and I mentioned to her that her big sister ( CC-Rider) used to be addicted to Battlechess on my old A1200.

I'm sure you all can viz her comments....

So.. Is there a port of that old Gem for Os4 ?

Can it be done ?

Do I just hunt the torrents for a pc version that might work on XP ?

Are we nearly there yet ?

There appears to be lots of interest in games called Battle Chess, so maybe it?s not completely hopeless.

Why not just install UAE on XP (spit) and play the proper amiga version?

Hi,
Can't you play it with E-UAE on AOS4 ?

Cheers,

NO WAY is that even remotely possible...

The 10 year old would start hogging the A1, and the 4 year old Outcast would throw tantrums and sit in the corner sulking after the tears have dried up...

Hi,

BattleChess was THE chess game back then.

I started playing that game in the age of 6.

Of course I still load it from time to time and play a match or two.

But I have a huge complain, when I set up the game and place cpu above/and level 3 the game is slower than death!
I have load it from DF0: on an A500+, I have load it directly from ram, I have installed it and run it from WHDload on an A1200, I have tried to do the same on various winuae cfgs on the pc side but the problem resists!
I have downloaded the same version of the game for DOS and it?s even slower!
(Btw, accidently I had downloaded and the remake of BattleChess!)

Anyway, if a port is going to occur I hope that someone knows how to speed up the chess engine..

Bye!

Ooops, I have just uploaded a screenshot of Battlechess running under E-UAE, BattlechessII runs fine too. Please keep your youngster away from your machine -:).

The screenshot is in window mode, it is running from HD (not adf), runs very well indeed.

Enjoy the memories.

I recognize that. It gets dreadfully slow on higher levels and it doesn?t matter which CPU you run it on, it is as slow anyway. An AmigaOS 4-port that is playable above level 2 would be welcome .

You got it spot on there. My youngest daughter moans when I need the A1, if she is playing games on it.

@poweramiga
The sound through E-UAE and battlechess on my A1 sounds as good as on my A4000.

Cheers,
Tim

Hi @acefnq

Enjoy the memories.

?
I finally found my copy of BattleChess. I discovered I can't use the A1 floppy to load it.
Why is this?
So, I formatted a 880 floppy in the A1 OK, but the A1200 doesn't recognize it! I formatted a another in the A1200 and the A1 says that cylinder '0' is invalid.
So what's wrong with the track-disk floppy?

Do you have a Catweazle controller?

If you use CrossDOSFilesystem on the A1 (PC0:) you can read it on the A1200 by mounting PC0:, if you use FFS (FD0:) you have to create a mountlist on the A1200 for 720 KB PC format floppies using FFS (make a copy of PC0 and change FileSystem to L:FastFileSystem and DOSType to 0x444F5300).

Or more simply, the A1(XE|SE) reads and writes PC format floppies unless you install a catweasel card which will let you read amiga floppies.

AmigaOne has standard PC floppy controller chip, the standard PC floppy disk can only read
9 sector per track disks (720k DD) or 18 sector per track disks (1.44mb HD).

The standard Amiga controller has 11 sectors per track (880k DD), and 22 sectors per track for HD disks.

The 2en difference is that MFM encoding on magnetic media is different on PC and Amiga.

The PC controller chips are not as flexible as the Amiga controller chips,
I think it has some thing to do whit rotation speeds of floppy media,

Buy a Cat MK3 or MK4 this will work whit the driver I wrote, but only in 880k DD format, the driver I have does HD and DD, but is buggy that way it?s not available.

Yes, a Mark IV. Too many Grim Reapers!

>If you use CrossDOSFilesystem on the A1 (PC0:)
I didn't do that. I was trying for the whole BattleChess.adf.

I've been using the A1200 so much the last two months, I forgot the A1 wasn't classic. I'm smacking myself in the head with the keyboard right about now!! I have a Sony floppy that came with my A1. It worked fine with Linux. Damn, it's hard to think PC!. OK, more keyboard adjustment!

Hi @LiveForIt
Forgot to think PC didn't I. <more keyboard adjustments...>

>Buy a Cat MK3 or MK4 this will work whit the driver I wrote, but only in 880k DD format, the driver I have does HD and DD, but is buggy that way it?s not available.

I have a MK4, but it GrimReapers on opening FD0:

@thread
Wow, wasn't even thinking! I see being in a Classic network with the A1 creates a psychological state -- Amiga Schitzophrenia! Gah!!!!
Thanks for the help!
