QuakeII OS4 Version problems...
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

See User information
I have just bought QuakeII OS4Version from Alinea Computer and I have some
problems with it:

1) During the installation process (I used the script "Install PC Version"),
the Installer gives me an error about the copy of the pak0 file, it tells
me: "Unable to copy pak0 file" then a requester appears with:
"Installation aborted" but then the installation continues up to the end
without problems. So I am able to run the game.

2) When I start the game I notice that the mouse doesn't work as it should. It "works"
but I am able to use the mouse only to go forward or backward but I am not able
to look up or down.. and I don't know how to fix it..

3) Last problem is about the audio cd..

I use an iso of Quake 2 (created from an original cd using amidvd) and i mounted it using diskimage device. I select this option on the menu of the game and set the unit number as 4. I start the game but I only hear the sound effect, no music at all..
I would like to try the physical cd but i don't know how to set it using
the quake console..

May you help me please?

I have a Sam440ep with AmigaOS4.1 FE update 1 (i tested also with update 2 (i have two different system partitions) but all the problems above remain)

Thanks

Can you tell me the exact error message (which line of installer script)?
As to the mouse check the ingame mouse options. I am not at the computer
right now but there are several options which might cause the problem like
mouselook disabled or mouse sensitivity set too low.
On the music are you sure your copy of the cd has audio tracks?
Try the command to list the audio tracks to see if
cd audio is found on the CD.

About the mouse, i was able to find the "problem", it was an option (my fault). Now it works (Thanks!)

About the installation errors, I reinstalled the game into another directory and took 3 photos to show you the exact sequence. i wasn't able to log the installation process..

So, now, remains the audio problem..

As i have different original copies of QuakeII i tried another pc version and this time I used the one shipped with the original copy for amigaos3PPC version and I had no errors during the installation process. Unfortunatly the music is still not working..

The first quake2 cd i used was from "Ultimate Quake Collection" which contains all three quake and despite all the games where on different cds all with its installer, they share a unique license key printed inside the box.. Maybe is this licence key that prevent the installer to work properly?

AmiDVD only supports data CDs/DVDs, not audio CDs nor mixed data and audio CDs.
You probably have the AIFF files created by CDFileSystem from the audio tracks of the CD in the ISO image now, but that can't work.

You need to use a different program to create an exact image file of the CD incl. the audio tracks, and you have to use a different file format like CUE which supports audio tracks as well.
ISO can only be used for data only CD/DVD image files.

@Joerg: Thanks for the information!

@nubechecorre: A different option BTW would be to transform the aiff files into Ogg Vorbis files. The Q2 port supports playing Ogg Vorbis files instead of CD Audio tracks if you choose so.

To enable the Ogg Support:

1) in the options put "Ogg Music" to "enable"
2) You can use ogg_status, ogg_list and ogg_play commands in the console. The game will also replay the music from ogg then instead of from CD Audio. Note that the Q2 releases on Gog and Steam include the Ogg Vorbis files already. Only the version on CD doesn't.

If you generate the files manually (if you install from Gog/Steam version the installer already takes care of all this), you need to put them to baseq2/music, and also generate the file baseq2/music/playlist.lst which is a textfile looking like

track02.ogg
track03.ogg
track04.ogg

etc.

A pre-prepared playlist.lst is in the installer directory in install_files/baseq2/music (the file uses the filenames as used in Ogg/Steam version).

Best regards,
Steffen

To be honest, the best option is to buy the Steam version (9,99€) which includes everything you need (OGG musics, xatrix and rogue mods included).

Once installed on Steam PC, just copy the entire folder (which is in steamapps) on a usb key.

On AmigaOS 4.1, mount the Quake 2 Installer ISO you've just bought from Alinea (you have to use DiskImageGUI which is in the system folder of your SYS: partition granted you've installed it from the Extras inluded with AmigaOS 4.1)

Launch Install_Quake2_Steam. Just answer two question : where to install and where are the Steam files (on your USB key).

And wait until the end of the installation.

Once finished, in the newly created Quake 2 folder : double click on convertstreamvideos.

Regarding this specific script (which converts 1920x1080p OGV videos to 640x480 MPG/AVI videos allowing them to be played smoothly by the game) : I had to use my own ffmpeg executables, the one included in the archive stopped everytime with an error message (whether on Sam460 or X1000).

On X1000, I could use the Altivec version (4 times faster than on Sam460) to convert thme (I had to modify the script to point to my ffmpeg exe).

Regarding music, don't bother with audio tracks, our systems are fast enough to play OGG tracks and it works flawlessly.

Playing audio tracks with recent systems will anyway require to have CDDAPatch installed to redirect Audio to AHI (or, if like me on the X1000, have an internal audio cable linked between the DVD drive and the audio board).

@TheMagicSN

How can I specify other video modes, eg 1680x1050 or 1280x1024 ?

It would have been nice to be able to specify another video player other than mplayer (Emotion or DvPlayer for those who bought them) to be able to play Full HD videos.

Good work BTW !

As K-L has already described, this way leads 100% to a successful installation of Quake2 including music as OGG.

I also opted for the Steam version of Quake2 at the time because, as already mentioned, it was up to date and offers OGG music.

AFAIK the cdplayer lib redirects the data to ahi and cddapatch is not needed. couldnt remember if i havw the patch installed or not.

as to screenmodes you mean for the game or for AmigaOS principially?

As to different video player for some games i added an env option can check the src tomrrow if i included that option in q2

Ah, I did not know this regarding the cdplayer.library

Regarding the screenmodes, I meant in the game. Former versions of Quake II used to allow the user to set screenmodes in one of the config file.

Sry this modifying screenmodes in the config is not supported in my version. Screenmodes are set in a static array in the source code.

What sort of screen resolution would you need ? It would not be hard to compile a special version, I think it was 2 or 3 lines of code which need to be changed.

thanks for all the infos. Btw, I would like to use my original cds of Quake II as i have a lot of original copies of the games instead of buying another one, sigh!.

So is there a way to play the music directly from the cd? I see that in the option there is not the sii3114ide.device for the sam users like me.. How can i set it using the quake env variable?

ok it was so easy.. my fault! just create a quake2 directory inside env-archive dir and two files with the name cd_unit and cd_device. Inside these two file simply put the device name and the unit.. that's all
