NGFS new version

Hi amigans,
In this topic from Hyperion.

Tonyw has offers the new version of NGFS, to the owners of the AmigaOne x5000.
I did write him some months ago.
But I am still wait response.
It's probably that him do not read the forum for work or other activities.

I ask you if someone can send me the new FS or give me the mail of tonyw.

I am is a real possessor of x5000.

@skynet In other thread they did say that V54.100++ is the last version.
And only for owners of the x5000 tonyw release the last version.
Or is need to wait the 4.2 in the next two weeks.

Yes, I'm currently on the same path as you, possibly a little further along. I heard back from Tony earlier this year.

It's not simply a matter of getting the new version from him. You also need to update uboot to the latest version, which you can get from Steve Solie. This will allow you to boot from the new NGFS.

I now have the latest uBoot (Feb 2024), although I don't know if I can distribute it.

Haven't gotten any further than that, hopefully will get some down time soon to install it.

i don't think we'll ever see a CFE update...

probably because like every other update.

there is no clear basis as to where, when, what and who is allowed to release anything.
that combined with the fact that no one is really at the helm deciding anything and there you go...

oh, and of course, no devs

Currently my SSD is formatted with the SFS/02 file system, but I am also very interested in being able to use NGFS and the latest firmware from U-Boot on my x5000.

The version I could use would be NGFS 54.55 from 2018 but as I could already read this version is also very old and not up to date

the problem is...there *is* no (be it official, inofficial, alpha or beta) release of NGFS for the nemo hardware (iirc tony told me its still in beta behind closed curtains, but also not ripe for public testing).

i doubt it will ever see the light of day, just with the nemo on-board lan driver...not going to happen

NGFS is not very fast at copying - not the fastest system.

The actual version of NGFS is good beside some bugs that corrupt the filesystem.
In rare case I lost a file, but usualy NGFCheck save everything.
But when it is corrupted the system becomes unstable.
I tried SFS to resolve the problem of the unstability.
But the time of boot and the usage are slower.
So I did back return to use NGFS.

I don't know the reason.
But I verified this conditions.

Especially when copying large files something like "C:Copy BUFFER 10240 ..." (5 MB parts) should be much faster.
May not be such a big problem with NGFS as AFAIK it's using 16 KB or even 64 KB blocks, which would be 3.125 MB or 12.5 MB parts with the default BUFFER 200.

For SFS partitions it's important to use a lot of file system buffers, much more than the default used when creating partitions.
At least 5000 (* 512 bytes = 2.4 MB RAM), but it depends on the partition size and especially the number of files and directories on the partition.
NGFS may be much faster with too few buffers, because of it's larger block size.

Except for copying large files NGFS should be faster for nearly all operations. It's not only an about 20 years newer file system design, SFS was created when the average partition size was only a few 100 MB and doesn't scale well to partition sizes of several GB or even TB, NGFS uses the new vector port file system API.
SFS doesn't which means dos.library has to convert the arguments and results of each file system call to/from the old packet API, which can be a large overhead if there are a lot of small operations done.
