I'm the same - on the desk is an M1 Mac Mini. It does have a fan but when I first got it I had to put it right up to my ear to confirm that because you can't hear it. It can roar. It did once when it did the equivalent of Windows BSOD but that's the only time I've ever heard it.

I keep meaning to do so many things with the system. One of which was to get in touch with a specialist PC place and see if they were aware of anyone willing to make custom cooling solutions. I don't like to see the 5040 idling at 70C, that's ridiculous for doing nothing much. I thought it was just the summer months but it's still doing it now that we well into autumn.

I agree that I hate loud systems, mine was too loud for me too so I disconnected the 3 front fans Now the computer is about as loud as a standard PC.

Next to the X5000 is a MacStudio and it's always a pleasure when I use the hardware alone and without noise.

With the front fans switched off, I have an idle temperature of 60 degrees, which is completely normal for a CPU. Perhaps you have a problem with the cooling or you have used a very narrow tower that does not circulate the air optimally.

@Maijestro the case is huge and certainly not narrow

https://www.coolermaster.com/en-global/products/mastercase-sl600m/

There is a lot of airflow in there (2x 200mm fans in the bottom) and I can feel the cold air coming out the top as it is a vertical cooling case aka "chimney effect". I just increased the fans to Medium. The noise is bearable and the temp is now 65C, but I agree with this much airflow it should be cooler.

I am tempted to remove the heatsink from the CPU and replace whatever thermal solution is there, paste or adhesive but knowing my luck I'll make it worse so I'm reluctant to do that.

Maybe something is keeping the CPU at high load? I don't have a CPU meter running so I don't know. That's the thing, it might be hot at idle, but it doesn't get much hotter under full load so if I had to guess, I'd say something here isn't right.

[EDIT] No - 0% according to CPU Dockey

@Maijestro can you share a link to the GPU you bought? I want to pick one up but want to make sure it's the right one and the same that you've gotten all that performance out of. Thanks!

I bought the card on Amazon:

Before you buy this card you should compare your performance data with mine. Here I have created some data with Starbox from Os4Depot that might be useful for you and others.

Yes, you're right, it really is a large tower and there should be enough space for the board and optimum cooling. I like the tower

That's all I have, there are also 2x 200mm fans installed in the tower plus a silent CPU fan.

I am currently toying with the idea of replacing the silent CPU fan with a Noctua Nr Premium fan, I had already done this with the A1222 and I had optimal cooling and it was much quieter.

At the moment this won't be necessary as all the fans are relatively quiet, but maybe it will change over time and then I'll do it again.
