Video Playback. Is This Expected?

Should I expect the following videos to use CPU and be unplayable?

This is on my X5000 with a 560RX and what whatever the latest software packages are called. I never can remember!

The following are results of issuing the Linux file command:
ISO MediaMP4 Base Media v1 [ISO 14496-12:2003]

And,
Matroska data (DDP.2.0.H.265-iVy.mkv)

I have:
RadeonHD 3.7
RadeonRX 2.12

In my kicklayout file, the HD comes before the RX.

Yes. Your video uses H.265 encoding which is not currently supported by the video acceleration library. H.264, however, is supported just fine.

Thanks. And the second file?

Not sure what that file encoding is at first glance. This is where @Hans might be able to help. The ISO standard here is just referring to the container format.

I'd need a whole lot more information first:
- Does @rj324 have the VALib + drivers installed?
- Which video player?
- What is the codec used for the video stream in these files?
- What's the video resolution?

With DvPlayer you can select Control => Movie Information (or right-Amiga + I) to check the codec, and whether hardware decoding is used. In Emotion video player you choose Project => About (or right-Amiga + ?) to get similar information.

No idea what to use with mplayer, or any other video player. None of our MPlayer ports have hardware accelerated video decoding, anyway.

HEVC/H.265 is supported by the RadeonRX drivers.** Alas, our avcodec library is too old. We'd need an updated avcodec library, and then the video players would probably need an update too (because avcodec does NOT maintain backward compatibility between major versions).

Hans

** The video decoding hardware in Southern Islands graphics cards doesn't support HEVC.

Right. So when I am downloading my "special" movies - I should avoid HEVC?

The avcodec.library on OS4 Depot is from 2008. Is there anything newer? If not, who would port it today? (Perhaps it's very straightforward?) Could it be fodder for Enhancer 2.3?

Entwicker-X did the latest avcodec library port, and it comes with their Emotion video player and the latest DVPlayer. The source-code for the library is here.
