If I have the error: "files has a checksum error on block xxxxx", can I simply backup the drive, format it, and copy the contents back again or is the hard disk failing and needing to be replaced?

It depends what filesystem you are using. FFS is prone to disk errors. SFS does also suffer from this, but much less often.

Yes, you should be able to backup / format/ restore without problems

As Rigo says, yes you can, but it depends on how you do the backup. the best way is to copy everything except the corrupted file(s) to another partition, format & copy back.

If you use backup software, some of it will backup and restore the errors as well, others will fall over the corrupted file(s) and fail.

Thanks Rigo.

What causes the checksum errors? It is quite likely the first time the drive has been written to in years so could it indicate other problems? Failed SCSI terminator or bad sectors on the drive?

I have a simple AREXX script for making backups via Dopus.
