Amiga Micro and DMA [Solved]
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

See User information
Hi !

I' d like to know if i am the only one that have problems with the DMA and the micro..

It happens when i try to watch a DVD with DVPlayer..

i can watch a movie for about 10/15 minutes and then it freezes.. i have to make an hardware reset from the switch of the case not from the keyboard to reboot my machine..

i have tried different DVD-ROM and i have enabled the DMA ( UDMA 2 ) from the U-Boot options..

I am the only one ( so is my micro that is faulty ) or someone of you had same problem ?..

My config. is micro amiga one 512Mbram and Update 4th..

Thanks

Is there a way to check if my DMA is not faulty ?

If you don't have problems with your HD (is DMA on?) destroying
files/data while copy operation from/to DVD/CD, than i would'nt
point to the DMA, of course you can always try watching the DVD
with DMA turned off

idetool -x youride.device your_unit_nr 63
e.g.
idetool -x sii0680ide.device 2 63

this sets your DVD to the fastest PIO mode, won't be saved
so at the next start it will be back to DMA), you can set it
back by hand with idetool -x sii0680ide.device 2 66

See if the DVD plays fine, but i doubt it

Wild guess:
Have you tried memtester to see if your mem is faulty?

Another wild guess:
Does it happen with all of your DVD's?
If not DVPlayer may choke on that specific DVD!?

@nubechecorre

NEC drives are very good and has been reported to
work well in AmigaOnes. I have one myself.

Btw I use a 80 wire cable for my DVD aswell as my harddrive.
What cables do you have?

They should be flat as well (as pointed by SG couple of times, round cables reduce the shielding ability of the passive wires, they probably look "geek"-ish but appear to be useles, myself was fooled once into buying a pair of these). Just cut the tube that holds them folded if you have the non-flat ones.

I have no problem with the HD .. i also tried to watch DVD without DMA enabled but the frame rate isn't good..

I try a lot of DVD and the problem persist..

My DVD is an " XJ-HD166S " i can't see a name.. there is only this code.. it' s a standard dvd-rom for pc.. it's OEM

For the cable, it's a standard ide cable ..

Do you think that is the DVD-ROM ?..

I tried another DVD that was an LG but the amiga didn't recognize it..

Standard 40 or 80 wire one?(are the wires thin and dense or not?)

Hi nubechecorre,

I had the same problem with playing DVDs on my ?A1 until I put a better heatsink and fan on the CPU.

I would stronly urge you to try improving the cooling to your CPU and see how much more stable OS4 becomes.

Hey PEB that is useful info, what fan did you replace it with?

@Mitch and nubechecorre

I got a zalman VF700-CU, but I would NOT recommend it because it requires some screw modifications to make it work.

I would, however recommend this one:

Afaik, it's the same module as XE, isn't it?

If so, the best chance is to find something that can use the 2 holes that already exist in the module. Extra thought on the solution that won't fall down is crucial. The link that appeared couple of posts ago looks like a good solution.

edit: meanwhile you can use a standard room fan blowing air on the cpu area to increase the circulation and test the DVD playback...

Everything works fine now that a new version of DVPlayer and the avcodec.library have been released

i don't know where was the problem ( DVPlayer or AVCodec.library ) but now i can watch DVD on the amiga and it' s fantastic to see how much they are smooth on a " simple " G3 800Mhz without ( for the moment ) the overlay

Well, what can i say ? ... AMIGA RULEZ

You can't know, maybe the problem is still the cooler but the new version use less cpu...

Totally agree. A good idea is to make the cpu busy with some cpu-hungry task running at low task pri while playing dvd, let it run for 10-15 minutes at least.
Just to make sure the thing is solved.
