Want to Purchase DVDRW for A1. Which would you recommend?

Hello all.

Above says it all, is there a particular model you would recommend? obviously it has to be IDE and internal.

Your recommendations welcome.
(am replacing the internal CDRW because, I found out last night that neither AMIDVD or MakeCD seem to want to work with it.)

LG GSA-4163B DL Burner

Works with FryingPan (actually it was me who sent Tomek the
data to implement it), burns fast and solid, never had
problems with burnt media and is pretty silent compared to
other DVD/CD burners.

Plus it's quite long on the market already, so you may be
able to grab it as a low price too

I was also looking at CD-Burner by a DVD-Burner so can anyone here with a DVD burner post its experience. I was looking at a LG one in the store yesterday but I'm not sure what the reference is, has anyone had any bad experience with LG drives (on A1 mainly, but other experience are interesting too) ?

Back to a quiet home... At last

For me LG is a perfect buy (as long as you stay on small
devices - i.e. i wouldn't buy a TV from LG [yet]).

The burner from my previous post i use myself for approx. 3
years now and never had problems with the hardware. It
didn't kill me a single medium. Works flawless untill today.

Of course you can always look for other brands but as far
as CD/DVD devices go, LG is my best bet.

Yes, me: I wouldn't touch any LG optical drive with a barg pole. Bad experiences both on Amiga and PC, things like units not being recognized, or only some disks being read.

I prefer much more any Nec drive (now Optiarc) than LG ones. In fact, I've been using Nec DVD+RW and DVD-ROM drives for years without a single problem.

My A1 has an MSI CD-RW in it but generally everything else I have is Lite-On - they're cheap and I've had zero troubles with them. The 24x CD-ROM is a good few years old now too....

I bought a SATA DVD+RW LD drive for my A1 and it worked perfectly so I got one for the A4000 which is also fine.

You can't go wrong with a Plextor IMO. Perhaps a bit pricier (sp?) than the competitors but oozes quality.
I have a PX-708A and it works flawlessly with MakeCD, FryingPan and AmiDVD.
As an added bonus you can even upgrade the drive's firmware from your A1!

With AmiDVD there were no problems at all yet, at least none reported, with LG and Plextor drives. The most problematic ones are AOpen and Pioneer drives, although I got DVD+R working with Pioneer drives it required a special workaround making it slower. On os4welt.de is a list of drives tested with AmiDVD: http://os4welt.de/html/tt/HWListe/Brennen/AmiDVD.html (with the Sony DRU-820a burning CD-R doesn't work, with all other listed DVD burners there are no problems left with AmiDVD AFAIK).

My AOpen works fine with CDR, CDRW, and all the single layer DVD formats, I have only trouble with Dual Layer DVD's.

I have bought an OEM DVDRW drive which is sold as a sony, but when I took it out of it's packaging it was a Lite-on DH-20A4-P06C. From what I have googled about it, it appears to be a very capable drive. As soon as I can swap it over, I 'll let you know how I get on.

How do we submit info for that site?
Also is there any chance of that table being presented in English?

From my experience keep away from LiteOn drives, drives manufactured in Japan are mostly reliable.

I buy NEC for pc and ASUS are getting good reviews at cdfreaks. dunno how compatible on Amigas.

I have a LITE-ON - DVDRW SHM-165P6S on my amigaone and it is working fine with amidvd and fryinpan, but it is quite noisy.

I would avoid samsung writemaster dvd-rw because they are extremely noisy (I have one in my A1200T).

I have a Pioneer 107D. Don't go there.
It was one of the first listed as compatible on IntuitionBase, but it now interferes with bootup, unless you change UBoot settings and change your user-startup.

I've never tried to burn anything with it, but I have considered throwing it into a fire.

My experience with LG on my Amiga One is good.
I have a DVD reader and one new writer and both normally works well with my Amiga One.

I buyed a DVD-RAM GSA-H58N last week and works flawlessly with MakeCD and Frying Pan but only tested to burn some CD32 games, music CDs and a few DVDs.

I suppose is good but how will it last,no?

My NEC DVD+RW go corrupted last week.

But for strange reasons my DVD drives lost many mediums in this time.Sometimes my fault, sometimes the fault of the drive.

Most of them Works. I had many different and mostly used NEC drives. However i think that ASUS is more quality and less noisy then my NEC drives.

Its a matter of taste.

I read somewhere Samsung are not 100% compatible with IDE specifics or what its called. They use some own commands. So maybe dont buy this.

Nobody mentioned bad experiences with Plextor drives yet, but they cost about twice as much (50-60 Euro) as Asus, LG, LiteOn, Samsung, Optiarc (Sony/NEC), etc. drives (25-35 Euro). Maybe it's worth it if you burn a lot of CDs and DVDs, but for most people only occasionally burning a CD or DVD it's not IMHO.
It's best is to get the exact model someone is using successfully in an AmigaOne already, just selecting one by brand isn't, IIRC even some Plextor drives were just relabelled BenQ drives.

I will recommend to buy from Aria...

LG... Not bad, quite cheap,... But I had two LG CD Drives which lasted only about 6 Months to a year...

I have a DLP LG TV... Similar (a bit bigger me think) to this Samsung one...
I bought it about four years ago and never had any problems with it... And at that time it was half the price of exactly the same TV from Samsung ! // It still costs me about ?2000...

I also had a few LG Mobile Phones... Their quality was similar to the Samsung V200 I had, and far better that the Nokias I owned... Though I went back to Nokia about 1 year ago as I wanted the features of the N73 which LG didn't have...
