OS4 Classic remake
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
It has been quite a long time since I used OS4 Classic. I had some problem with stability with the networkcard and when data was transfered I got a strange crashes, even when using the new RTL8029 driver.

I dont know if it is the driver that causes it or if my NIC isnt compatible enough..

MY question is.. Is it possible to do a "remake" of the original OS4 Classic cd and merge february update into it.. Is it possible to make a new Boot-disk with the latest rom-update?

Anyway, I am gonna try to reinstall it all with a new harddrive..

Thanks in advance..

Are you using the updated drivers? The original CD had faulty network drivers on it (was my fault, sorry) but there was a quick update shortly after release with updated drivers. I think it's available at Hyperions website in the restricted area.

I think the following should work.

Copy your OS4 CD to a directory, copy over the components from the update, making sure all occurances of the older components are updated.

Then use AmiDVD to burn it to CD, making it bootable.

A1XE, A1200T, X1000, X5020, CDTV, CD32 , A500+ A500

I dont get a crashlog, the system doesnt "Crash" in regular meaning... The GUI seems to lock, I cant press any icons or write anything in f.i. Wookiechat, but I can still move the mousepointer and the harddrive seems to be working...

Please try what ZeroG suggested, maybe there is something in the log which could help.

Other than that i can't help you now. I'll try to reproduce your problem with some of the betatesters and hopefully fix it. But please note: i'm only the developer/maintainer of those drivers, if and when they will be released as an update or something isn't up to me, but of course i'll try to find a way.

So i have to ask you for yet a little bit more patience..

I get this problem on OS4.0 AmigaOne version too.

Usually it is caused by a program that has overwritten memory - hence the random nature of the freezes.

It'll be a pain to track down, but if it is pretty common you could try running MemGuard - that should trap any bad memory writes and throw you a Grim Reaper instead with a stack trace for the faulty app.

Ok, while the logs are unfortunately useless, just to be sure: The lockups only occurr if you're using rtl8029.device?

If so, there is probably something which makes rtl8029.device stay in its interrupt handler.. which would explain the described behaviour but which would also be very weird as there are other reports of beta testers that rtl8029 is working fine..

In any case, i'm working on it.. there are some issues left i have to resolve and considering my limited time it can take a while. Sorry.

No! I am not sure anymore, that it is the RTL driver, it might very well be something else too...

But mostly it happens when I am online and surfing the net, but it has happened with requesters f.i. who isnt using the network..

Ok, so it isn't sure its rtl8029 at all.. well, i changed the topic of this thread back to its original to reflect this.

Nevertheless i'm working on an improved version of rtl8029.device which will hopefully make it for the next OS update.
