NTFS driver for OS4?
Not too shy to talk

Hi,

Would anyone be interested in porting this to OS4?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS-3G

It already exists for the following OS'es:
Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, BeOS, Haiku

Would it be difficult to make an OS4 driver out of it?

That's only for 3.x and MorphOS though, and only allows reading. As far as I can tell it's not based on the NTFS-3G project?

Did anyone try that under OS4 btw?

"open source cross-platform" in this case seems to mean 'only for posix systems' rather than actually cross-platform. So I guess the answer is yes.

Everything related to filesystems under AmigaOS is complicated.

Seriously, if you do want to contact me write me a mail. You're more likely to get a reply then.

I didn't used NTFS, but used ext2/3 from the same
source, used only for reading but worked
well.
Maybe we can try to contact the author for an OS4 version

So consider I have installed the NTFS driver and the TD64 patch, how would I go about mounting a partition on a PC hard-disk with it?

I don't know exactly what you would do.

However, I know GiggleDisk can automatically
mount NT drives...

Could you elaborate a bit on that?
It would be interesting to know why.

I don't know much, but my understanding is that (a) it isn't documented very well (dunno about OS4...), and (b) the way filing-systems are supported is a bit of mess due to poor design inherited from early AmigaOS days.

I'll just say, if somebody ports NTFS-3G to OS4, I have some PayPal money standing by...

like kotler sayd, I used giggledisk to generate the
mountlist, the bad part was that giggledisk doesn't
recognized all the partitions on the hd, but was
a very complex one, on others hd giggledisk worked well

and they're completely different from filesystems on other platforms (ie. porting filesystems from other platforms isn't easy)

btw for http-handler I got most of the documentation from the old AmigaMail archives on the DevCD (handlers are similar to filesystems but less complicated). There's no real documentation for this stuff in the autodocs, includes or even the RKRMs. I've been told the Amiga Guru Handbook is the best source, although I've never seen a copy.

Ah, that book would be the one where a rewrite was finished & it was going to be published (by Guru Meditations?), and they cancelled it at the last moment because of one new torrent to the OLD book (which IMHO seemed like an excuse to not publish, since torrents for everything are on Pirate Bay, and punishing everyone for one persons actions doesn't make sense).

If you have any tutorial/example that could be included in the OS4 SDK, send it to me

There's empty-handler source on OS4 depot which I OS4-ified. There are a few things I discovered after uploading that, so it isn't 100% up to OS4 spec. I'll take a look at it and send you an update.

Is it not better to do a application that can read from partitions first, once you have some success in reading, then one can maybe write filesystem.
