Also, can you please check if something is spitting out debug information while you're playing the game ("dumpdebugbuffer ram:log.txt"); there shouldn't be, but that would slow things down.

I tried that and there's an output to ram:log.txt then.
Some errors (like soundfile not found or something like that) can be found in that log file and everything which is outputed to the quake-console (like "player was killed by ..") can also be found in that log-file.

The log-file is not too big and I wouldn't expact that this slows things down (so much).

Moving the mouse in the quake menu after starting a "fight" is also terribly slow.

Typing "cg_drawfps 1" or "set cg_drawfps 1" in the quake-console has no effect. The only thing that happens is, that

"unnamedplayer: cg_drwafps 1"

is displayed in the console window (and in log.txt ) .

Yes, the debug file would have to be huge for it to have any impact on speed. It was worth examining though even if it was unlikely.

Ok, try \cg_drawfps 1 (or put the setting in config file)

I tried it but each time I try to connect to an existing server ... it tell me "server mismatch" and then it go back to the main menu (single player, multi player, etc ... )
When I try to create a server, it freeze where I choose the map.
Tried on a SAM440ep AmigaOS 4.1

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

I had a go at this without looking into it to closely.

Think I had managed to set up a solo game with no bots with me as server.
The game crawled.

Had another go connecting to a server in a multi game.
Much faster this time.

My problems appear when certain sounds effects come into play.

Seems to be other players sound effects.
Get a message to that effect on screen.
Get sound that is just noise and at that point the speed drops.

Sam 4.1 OpenArena.

It is wierd.
Get the impression if I didn't have these sound errors, it would run smoothly constantly.

\cg_drawfps does work and as I said .. the framerate is LOW, to be more exact 0 FPS! So, I was right with 0.5 to 1 fps

But then I realized that the framerate depends on the arena, I choose.

0 fps I get for the first Arena (Tier 1),

The third arena (Tier 1) is much more fun, because here I get 18-30fps

Strange, that the speed is so different in these arena-levels.

Unfortunately, the game is still not playable. Even with 30 fps, you only can move forwards/backwards/left/right very, very slowly. (Seems that the keyboard input is catched too slow??). Looking around with the mouse is fast , though.

Moreover, after installing OpenArena and starting it, everything is "green", means GL-Mode doesn't seem to work. In Software-rendering the textures, etc. look old-fashoned/unnice -- don't know how to describe it.
In Addition, after switching to NON-GL-Mode, It's not possible to switch back. In the settings, you can set GL-Mode to ON but appearently this has no effect. The screen re-initialises, but the "look" stays the same.

nexus.

Quake 3 doesn't have software rendering mode.

I was about to ask you if you get better experience if you switch to 16-bit textures, low detail models etc...

Compiled already :) I will upload this at some point but I would like to find the bug that makes floors flicker in OpenGL mode first. Meanwhile, you can play the older version which works nicely in SW mode.

I tried lowest possible resolution with lowest possible detailes, etc.
Still, I don't get more than 0 FPS in the first arena of tier 1.

Are you sure, that you're then still in GL-Mode? IF so, then I'm perhaps as well. I thought, it would switch to software rendering. If not, then gl-mode looks quiet ugly

I there a way to check if it's gl-mode or software-mode during playing?

Thanks,
nexus.

Yes, that is strange.

That sounds like it's not an OpenGL problem. It's strange that it manifests itself only on the SAM though.

AFAIK, the greenish look is a known bug in the Warp3D drivers that is being investigated. I thought that Quake-3, and therefore OpenArena didn't have a software mode.

Apart from the first arena running so slowly, the rest are probably due to issues with other parts of the system.

i finally managed to connect my sam to some audio device :D
And now, the problem with OpenArena is easy to see (or to hear )
Sund is crappy and stucks at the same note in the first arena of Tier1 (that's probably the reason for these 0 fps?). In level 3 of Tier 1, sound is not perfect (every few seconds there's a glitch) but more or less ok.

So, could be sound the problem for the low framerates on SAM?

It could be that sound is a victim of the performance issue.
