SimpleMail's development?
Just popping in

Now, that we have hapilly learned that AmiGift is still in development, i'm interested to know about the status of SimpleMail.
It hasn't been updated since december of 2007 and that was only a minor bug-fix release. There are no signs of development since then. Is it over?

So, let's hope that they will follow the tradition, by making a big, new release.
Otherwise, i'll have to move to YAM 2.5. There are too many vital and basic features, that SimpleMail lacks and YAM has them for quite a long time now.

So what does Yam have that SimpleMail doesn't?

I'm pretty sure I don't know half the features of either package.

I only use the basics of Yam so there is probably more benefits than I realise.

In brief:
- More than one account from the same service
I think that they decided to impose this restriction in order to prevent abuse from SimpleMail users, but just one account is way too strict! They should at least increase the limit to 2 accounts. Many of us are using one "formal" and one "informal" e-mail address from a e-mailing service. Even ISPs offers you more than one account!

-Crop/strip attachments
More than essential, imho. YAM has it since v2.4, iirc..

-Full message search
Another very important (for me) feature which is missing from SimpleMail. Even the ancient MicroDot has it..

Other less important, but good to have, features which are included in YAM:
-XPK support
-Mail receipt function
-Automatic DST adjustment (?)

I think that the only feature YAM lacks is proper HTML support. It just converts HTML into ascii or something, but i'm not sure that i'm right on this one.
To be honest i only have had a peek into YAM 2.5 when the official version came out and i was impressed on how much it has progressed. It is no longer head-to-head as it was in v2.4.
On the other hand it starting to become bloated, imho...
As you said: "I'm pretty sure I don't know half the features of either package. I only use the basics of Yam"

But for one email account you means that you can send email from only one account ?.. because you can receive email from different account..

For the search function it is included..

for the html it is partially supported..

I have provided an explanation on what i'm talking about.

I doubt that you understood what i wrote, unless i'm missing something...
I mean the ability to perform a search inside the body of messages.

You mean in YAM? Ok.

Full message feature is not something I would use much, but I can see how it could be very useful depending on the type of emails people receive.

More than one account from the same service would be an issue for me though.

Think I'll stick with Yam for now.

Cheers

Have you emailed the authors, or used the web site, to tell them what features you want? Last time I spoke to one of them, they wanted suggestions, since they felt it did everything they thought was needed.

Simplemail does support multiple accounts (as much as you want). There is a bug in the "avoid duplicates" handling. Simplemail does store the UID-List per server but most servers have an UIDL per user, so if you have two (or more) user per server and are using "avoid duplicates" it wont work correctly.

It does not yet support multi-user, if that's it what you meant.

Yes, but they doesn't seem to be very communicative. Perhaps my e-mails were just caught by their spam filters.

The web site is unusable with Aweb and IBrowse... 0_o All links leads to the homepage. You can check it up for yourself if you like. Perhaps i will try to access it with OWB 68k later, but, in any case, i'm sure that they are intelligent enough to know what important features SimpleMail misses. I don't think that i have to say anything they are not aware of, already.

Hey, good tip! It was a bug of the "avoid duplicates" afterall. Thank you for this!

Why should they add features that they don't need & that no-one asks for? I certainly wouldn't bother

edit: Plus most freeware programmers can usually do with a bit of encouragement & feedback, to know that their efforts are worthwhile (and that someone is actually using it).

Theres 3 new options in the .config file..

Hidden.DontDrawAlternatingRows
Hidden.RowBackground
Hidden.AltRowBackground

The first one can either be =Y or =N .. that was easy.. but how do I configure colours?
I've tried:

Hidden.RowBackground=db,db,db
Hidden.RowBackground=dbdbdb
Hidden.RowBackground=219,219,219

No luck, colours look wrong! I've emailed the Simplemail team in the meantime..

Same as for the other colors.

0xaabbcc for example.

In the next version there will be a proper setting.

Bye,

Edit: These settings look nice if anyone wants to copy and paste this to the end of your .config file:
Hidden.DontDrawAlternatingRows=N
Hidden.RowBackground=0xdbdbdb
Hidden.AltRowBackground=0xc6c6c6
