Amiupdate File Bonanza
Just popping in

Tonight I ran Amiupdate and it told me to try and change the server tooltype.

I did just this and suddently an amazing number of files where available for download...

Do I need these files? I didn't really know so I changed the tooltype back to normal again...

The requester you saw tells you about the new SDK Database. The AutoInstall script checks for an SDK: assign, and if found, it will show this requester. Therefore only people with the SDK installed are informed of it's existance, as it's useless to users without the SDK.

The new database includes many third-party libraries that can be added to the SDK in order to make porting from other platforms easier.

As to whether you really need it, is a matter for you to decide.

i.e if you are not a developer, you should remove the SDK: assign from your user-startup and remove the SDK directory from your harddisk.

I knew there was a reason when I set up my SAM to have 10g for my work partition... Had a quiet daydream of nice developing material filling up SDK to make compiling easier... yay!

Have to look into this AmiUpDate thing tonight...

Question: If I install the generic SDK, its on one of my backup DVDS from classicOS, will AmiUpDate update everything in the tree properly?

thanks

No, only the libraries it currently knows about. Enquires about the SDK database should be aimed at the maintainer:

AmiUpdate is imho a must have!

It is easy to use for users, developers and even I managed to use it for AISS

Yes, I can see it... guess I'm still too old School where I like to know where to put everything but only because I put it there...

That's what seperates Amiga Users from other Users, in general alot of us know what every file on our machine is for... how many ibm users for example do or ever did :D

And that isn't a flame, just an observation at the time and still now...

also, good work with AISS Mason :D

Amiupdate sets up an AppPaths drawer in Env-Archive which stores a text file with the path of the application installed on your system. This is not for every app, but only those that use AmiUpdate.

Hence, you can be modern, and old school.

That sounds comfortable, I will look at it directly after work.

She can read House and Garden and I'll be in tinkerland!

Cool!

And best of both worlds, can't lose there, thanks for the extra summary Swoop

So basically I must have installed the SDK at one point. I wonder why... Could it have something to do with Sobjs?

Anyway, I might download just for the fun of it. I recognize a lot of the library-names and it's quite nice to see the progress!

i'm not at my aone currently but iirc if i do a check updates run all the libraries i have not yet installed in the sdk: are listed and also checkmarked.
at a first glance it is hard to see that they are "new".
i'd suggest to:
- NOT checkmark them per default as usually i don't want to install *everything*
- show them in a different style/color/icon/(whatever) to make clear that they are not installed yet

i also had the impression that one library was listed with a wrong name. i mean it was listed like "...sdl..." but it installed the "...sso..." or smth like that (don't remember now.

also i found that some packages installed the .so files somewhere in the sdk: folder. shouldn't they be installed to SOBJS: instead?

thanks and
byebye...

I have SDK 'light'. Does the database apply to it also?

As I said above, queries against this database should be directed at its maintainer.

Yes, all updates can be applied to the 'light' SDK.

Actually this one looked like an AmiUpdate feature request:

I agree - if AmiUpdate is picking up things that are not already installed, they should be unticked by default.

The fact that it says "Not found..." is not enough?

TBH I had reservations about this new database, and now I'm definitely starting to regret it.

no - i don't think so at least it should not be selected. that would be more usable in my opinion.

why? the database is very nice and needed if you get a list of possible candidates you can install. thanks for doing it!
but already installed software which has an update lying on the server should have precedence imho, shouldn't it?

thanks and
