AmigaOne won't boot (Or do anything before that) [Solved]
Just popping in

See User information
Hi peeps,

I have a tiny problem... ^ That. It seems to be the same intermittent problem that's troubled me for a while. My A1 only seemed to want to boot after it had been on for a few moment. When pressing the power button to turn on, the usual hard drive clicks as things come alive were limited to a couple of clicks hen nothing. I'd turn it off, then on again & it'd boot.

I now seem to be stuck at the first stage. Power on, a few clicks but no UBoot screen or bootup procedure. There's no HD activity either aside from 2 or 3 clicks when I turn the machine on.

I've disconnected my sil card & sound card to try & rule those out so now all that's left connected is mu mouse & keyboard, gfx card & memory but still no UBoot screen (I assume that even without hard drives & CD drives connected, I'd see a UBoot screen at the very least).

Has anyone got any ideas what might be the problem?

Thanks, FuZion.

@Bean... You know what stuff is on that machine don't you. Ewww... Gotta get this sorted out pronto!

Sounds like a "heat" problem, it only boots when the machine
is "warm"

Try reseating the RAM, maybe press in the cpu to see if it
came loose, maybe even try another battery...

edit: Oh? Did i miss something?
It won't boot AT ALL? I thought it boots up when running
for a few minutes?

Dead harddrive problem!
Now go and buy a new bigger one, and remember to take a backup if you can.

As shoe already said, you should replace your battery. If you hook up a serial terminal and see the U-Boot output like this:

Quote:

U-Boot 1.1.6 (Nov 21 2006 - 15:03:06), Build: 11/20/06

CPU: MPC7450 v2.1 @ 800 MHz
Board: AmigaOne
DRAM: 512 MB
FLASH: 0 kB

This is usually an indication that the battery is dead.

(And don't mind the 1.1.6, it's an experimental version )

It used to be intermittent, now it's pretty permanent, all day today at least.

@LiveForIt

I've ruled the hard drives out (2 of them) by disconnecting them completely.

@Outcast

The PSU I have it relatively nw (About 1 year & half ish old). I hope it's not that.

@tfrieden

The clock has been losing it's time a little, would that be the same battery? (Flat button things aren't they?).

Thanks for the replies guys. FuZion.

Sheesh, that's bad, try the battery...

Got a spare peecee standing around?
Get the battery and plug it into your AOne and see...

Yes that can be indication of dead battery,

I have PC at work, if I have it on 24/7 the backup battery become drained and clock becomes complicity wrong, now I turn the computer off over night, I have no longer any problems whit that.

First.. Unplug ... then replug the mains. ( there IS a reason for that odd request)

Take the side off your A1 and observe the cpu fan.

whilst looking at the fan press the on button.

Did the fan momentarily turn ?

If yes..

Psu buggered.

I think a capacitor in the psu buggers.. Thats why ( I found) disconnecting it from the mains the re-attaching seems to give some kind of result.

Just had two psu's go the same way on my daughters pc's. (seperate machines)

From my experience, a lot of A1s eat batteries like popcorn. But only one of my A1s eats batteries while the other two have yet to have a new battery installed. In any case, it is a simple and inexpensive way to fix your machine in a hurry. Replace the battery.

I would also recommend hooking up the serial cable. Without serial output you are totally blind and have no idea what could be wrong. With serial you can get valuable hints to pinpoint the problem fast. Note that 9600/8/N/1 is the default unless you changed it.

Battery taken out of my spare door stop (PeeCee) & installed. And almost all is good.

I have a UBoot but it's not booting. Would my sil card settings have been lost? I have a message saying (Amongst other things):

"FLB: no SLB found in any of the designated boot sources; returning to uboot."

Thanks for the battery hints, FuZion.

Yep, your settings have been put back to defaults. You should be able to get things booting again using just the "menu" command from uboot. The default is to boot off the internal IDE interface of course.

Ok, one cut finger (Bloody thing bit me!) & a few settings updated & I'm nearly there.

Bus 0: is timing out (I imagine this is the onboard), even thought I've changed the settings to use the Sil card & after all my devices are scanned (2 hard drives & 2 cd drives), the UBoot preferences menu is coming up automatically. I habe to escape out of that to continue the boot process.

Any final suggestions?

FuZion.

Put your sil card back and plug your HDD in.
And don't forget to do a saveenv after changing your settings.

SET ENV IDE_MAXBUS 0
SAVENEV

That will prevent UBoot searching for HD's on the internal bus

@Chip & Raziel

That's the one, saveenv.

For some reason, it's still automatically going into the UBoot preferences meaning I have to exit those before it boots, but I'l have a look at that tomorrow.

Thanks for the help everyone, FuZion.
