I like using my Amiga with OS4.x because...

Hello all,

Given the doom and gloom attitude on the current Amiga scene elsewhere, I thought I would start something positive here, something to celebrate the usage of our Amiga's/Peg II Running OS4.x

So, to start.

I like using the Amiga because.

Its simple to use.
Its not Windows! (thank god)
and I love to use.
OWB, Wookiechat, Amiupdate, AmigaAMP, DVPlayer + OS4Depot.

Over to you, what makes you want to use yours?

Mikey C

No cause is lost if there is but one fool left to fight for it.

Well, you allready said it! ... but yes, I do use windows 7 but switches back to aos 4.1 pretty often since windows gets on my nerves. I just love using aos 4.1 and all the nice programs. Windows are used pretty much for a couple of sites that doesn't work in aos 4 browsers yet and for a few games.

Also, aos 4 feels very fast compared to windows 7 (it shall become fast again... yeah right) ...

I enjoy using aos 4 more than enything else as simple as that.

Wholeheartly second

I have a (temporary) PC sitting on the floor next to me ... it's nearly all the time off. Only for *very* few tasks i need to turn it on to check something.

My Amiga is running nearly 24/7 when i'm at home.
It's easy to use, fast, silent and does everything i want (using all of the programs and sites you mentioned).

But the reason why i *love* working with it, is the feeling of user control i still have with the latest incarnation of AmigaOS

... it does what I want, when I want. Not what M$ want.

It's fast, clean, quiet, and just a generally nice machine to work on. My SAM and my A1 are both great - the Sam is nicer but the A1 has more grunt!

I haven't turned my Mac or PC on since I got the Sam, I think...

There's a lot of small things but if I put it all into a single sentence: AmigaOS irritates me much less than any other computer system out there. (It doesn't irritate me at all.)

I like using the Amiga because:

- The directory-structure is much better than the Windows one (libs, datatypes, devs and so on...).
- I can install many programs and games only by copying it on my hd and I can deinstall it only by deleting it.
- The Ram-Disk
- The Soft-reset
- The Startup-Sequence and User-Startup
- I can solve problems better than on Windows, because I know (mostly) what the Amiga does.
- The Amiga-community
- Yam, IBrowse, OWB and so on...
- It's not Windows

and many more reasons...

.... because of you guys. The community spirit and camaraderie keeps me here...

The fact that the OS is slick, fast, good fun and brings back a lot of great memories are an excellent by-product!

My faves:

Hollywood 1 - 4 (inc Designer)
TuneNet
WookieChat
DVPlayer
EUAE
AmiPhoto

Some great programs with good concepts.

I long for the days when we get ourselves at least a few thousand user-base so we can have a few more shows - niche OS is fine by me!

Oh, and an active Demoscene, if we could get that back, that would be fantastic!

Rude!

Since 1997 when i went to PC i was always dreaming of a new Amiga with Truecolor Workbench with high resolutions and no limitations like 2MB Chipram. Well, an Amiga with GFX-Card was no option for me then, because of no dragable screens and too slow CPUs.

When i hear from Amiga OS4.0 and new hardware i come back to Amiga scene.

Now i?m using my Sam440ep on daily usuage and told my girlfirend its more securer for homebanking (with owb) since we had a trojan horse on our pc. Sometimes she?s googling and surfing around and with amiga theres no security flaws because x86 trojans will not run on os4.1

I?m working as Notebook Technician in my job, so i?m pissed off to work with annoying slow windows at home! It?s a real enjoyment for me like taking a nice holiday trip when i switch on my Sam440ep and work/play with it.

My main resons for using it are:

- Fast response of the UI
- Intelligent Ram-Disk!
- fast boot/reboot
- Dragable Screens!
- Own Screen for every App if i want it to have a sober Workbench Screen
- I?m the King and not the OS!
- It doesn?t let me wait for minimalistic functions like open a drawer
- It doesn?t tell me "you have not the right to make this and that.."
- It?s easy to understand and to learn
- It?s easy to repair if something bad happen
- It doesn?t make annoying disc-accesses like windows all the time
- It?s lightweighted and programs start like a flash
- I don?t need it to shutdown, just swith off
- No annoying "wait for installing updates" during shutdown (i want to sleep NOW and not when windows tell me! I have to wait for it because i turn off all my computer equipment with a switchable power-plug for security reasons like Fire..etc)
- Great Community!
- No annoying Adverts in Freeware Programms like Messenger..etc
- I?m in love with the Workbench GUI and Concept since 1993, don?t tell this my wife
- It satisfied all my expectations

I use this tools:

- Ibrowse
- OWB
- Simplemail
- DirOpus
- DV Player
- Amigaamp (for shoutcast streams)
- Tunenet (for Custom Amiga Modules)
- Photogenics 5
- Arteffect
- Cinema V4 Pro
- Cubic IDE (for PHP Coding and Webdesign)
- Amiphoto
- Digita Organiser
- Wordworth (for writing letters)
- AmiDVD (great small programm for buring CD and DVD)
- SabreMSN
- Alt-Tab-Switcher
- Eastern

And yes, if i work with Windows i will aged faster, when i work with Amiga i got and feel younger!

When i install OS4.1 my first time i was very excited, curious and happy like i was when i got my first amiga.

Amiga OS is really (good) for your heart and soul!

do you meen that devs is a better structure ???

i love the ram disk. and amicygnix.
diropus. and much of others,

the whole backwards compabilaty? is shitty though.
alot of a1200 and a4000 stuff doens work. and i dont talk about games and stoff with the disk drive,
euae is simple to slow to run an amiga 1200 and then run games like qourke or imagine3d eyecany and so on...

wasnt ther an eyecandy 2 comming up a couple of years ago ?

I'm basically using OS4.1 for everything. The laptop (Windows XP) only ever gets switched on for serial debugging now. I have an Eee running Linux which I use for anything OS4 can't.do. Linux is a complete mess - worse than Windows - but I like the fact it is fairly quick, secure and pretty much everything is free, and the fact it isn't Windows as I have to put up with that at work!

AmigaOS - any flavour - beats them both hands down on useability, speed, simplicity but unfortunately not on software base any more. The apps we do have are mostly excellent though.

lol, good one Mikey

I like my Amiga and use it everyday simply because I'm ignorant to any other cpu/os

I'm a self proclaimed Amiga Elitest and none can argue about it because you don't have a common frame of reference

I've had a very lucky escape I think

onward AmigaOS and custom hardware forever! yay!

One on the reasons I like my A1 is because it starts so quickly. Less than a minute and I'm up and running. And shutdown is as quick as hitting the power button.

I also like that when I extract something it goes where -I- want it to, not where some os thinks it should go.

My most used apps are YAM, IBrowse and OWB. I'd use Netsurf more if it had scroll wheel support. Some of my other favorite apps are Mplayer, MAME, AmiSoundEd and VICE. I like TuneNet too but it has some issues with 4.1.

*sigh*

I've written it on my new list so there's half a chance it'll get done. Aside from an odd graphical glitch, it's the only thing on this list (there are more on the old list and in my head )

edit it's done, I don't want to hear any more about this...

I use Amiga all the time here. I must admit that Cygnix is used a lot:
I use X11 e-mail client (amiga build) since there's no decent non-x11 alternative for IMAP client.
And I my work is to develop under linux?and administrate some unix/linux servers. I connect to with cygnix and ssh.
Otherwise (besides ocassional seamonkey) - amiga only.
All non-amigaish tasks are performed on AOS display.
And the only encounters with Windows are to compile the stuff I develop on windows for releas purposes, windows is displayed on Amiga too (vmware running XP + compiler inside window in cygnix or vnc session).
Yes it's not perfect, lacks some stuff people call vital for some reason, but it's Amiga and can do a lot and in sane way.

becouse for some very strange reassons, these intros from uprought on os4 can't be closed by mouse click, or by 'esc'. It's can be closed only by pressing by mouse on closed gadged of window. Then wait few second and programm are started (for me avoid 'mouse click' and/or 'escape' are suck, but it is:) ).
