We need NEW Games
Just popping in

The company that was doing a lot of porting of games is now too busy coding the OS. And good that they are

But...

What is needed is for more devs to start porting MODERN games to the platform before it is released.

We don't want to be out of date.

I know a lot of guys are trying to port apps but games were such a big part of the Calssic Amiga. We can't have a revival if our games look poor and outdated compared to today's offerings.

Game Porters NEEDED URGENTLY!!

Or, we need less people asking for software and more learning how to code :)

Do you really think I will be able to learn how to code and port modern sophisticated games really soon before the launch of OS4??

We have to be realistic here.

The guys that can do it should start porting NOW!.

We can learn later and maybe in 5 years I will be able to code, if ever.

Don?t think the priorities are wrong, we need to get the OS up to standard first, then we can think about games.

Right now I?m working on CW driver, because that is most important to me, when that is done how knows what I be doing.

We are working on what they think is important like X11 / web browsers, graphic programs, some are working AWEB, IB, generally we are doing every thing we can to bring the platform back.

There is a few obstacles when porting modern games, like missing API?s, like OpenAL, http://www.openal.org/

CW ??

Have you tried porting any games?

I must disagree. Games are considered important for any platfor to survive. There should be efforts alonside the apps and OS. I am not saying you should drop the serious stuff just that we need more people to think of the gaming scene too.

We want an all rounder when it is released.

Yes, Games are important, but if we are to avoid falling into the same trap that commodore made with the amiga, we must get some decent applications over first.

We need decent browser, word processor, spreadsheet program and possibly a good paint package program.

We already have Hollywood and PageStream.

Whilst we do need new games, we must not allow the Amiga to fall into the "Games" console category it was once marketed under Commodore. Because, to be quite honest, given the standard of the consoles out there, like WII, PS3, XBox. We don't stand a chance.

Lets be realistic about it.

People aren't going to buy os4 amigans for the games though.

To get anywhere we'll have to find another way. We're starting from zero with absolutely no support from the rest of the software industry (And none to be had for years to come).

What we need is more bedroom developers and an aura of fun and creativity, and start from there.

Cool!!

It would be better if we could back up all thse floppies to CD or DVD and run them. Floppies are so unreliable.

The only one's that are going to build this platform (os4) are those that are already into it. And the more who learn to create and not just to consume the bigger our chances are to succeed.

What about the version of OpenAL that is inside the OS4SDK?

Want to be realistic?

Even the most hardcore of coders can't port a modern game in a matter of weeks. It's months at best and 99% of modern games won't even be able to run on the hardware that we have.

A modern game is written in C/C++ and the code usually is well structured and with portability in mind so after get a licence and access to the source is relatively easy to port it.Another story is if you want to make a moder game from scratch.

But, however remember that a good game not have to be obligatorily a 3D game with millions of textures and complex artificial intelligence routines.Simple games and 2D games could be also a "killer game".Originality and addictivity can compete with any upper duper 3D game

Just a little point I'd like to add. Mac OS doesn't have THAT many modern games if you look at it's whole catalogue. What it does have though are a lot or <B>original</b> titles. A lot of puzzlers, games that try something different, a different twist on an existing theme or in some cases, a game that's been done before, only with higher quality graphics (i.e. Very polished).

One example is a solitaire game, not the card one, the one where you jump pegs to remove them. I have a version that has fantastic graphics & the "pegs" are actually glass balls with a bump mapping effect as you drag them over the board & other pegs to take your move. Here's a link to some shots: Here.

Personally I don't mind OS4 not having new modern games to play (Yet), but I would like to see new original titles even if they be smaller games, like mini games.

FuZion.
